White Takes the Win Against Blue in Annual Meet

PROVO, UT – Victory went to the White Team in the annual Blue and White scrimmage Saturday morning in the Richards Building Pool.

“The Blue and White meet is the end result of the week long events and activities we did,” explained head coach John Brooks. “I’m very proud of the team; they are coming together nicely and they fought really hard in the swimming meet. Even though there are a lot of off events and it’s hard for people to understand it all, we had a lot of fun and are excited for the season.”

After a week full of activities and a meet including 26 events, the White team finished with a total of 1,095.5 points to the Blue team’s total of 1,005.5.

Swimmers Levi Jensen, Connor Stirling, Kelly Hatanaka and Gwen Gustafson went strong for the White Team, leading them to their victory. Payton Sorenson and Tamaalelagi Tuitama were the top performers for the Blue Team.

Divers also competed in their own events and were able to have fun in preparation for the season.

“The divers did very well for their competition against each other,” said head diving coach Tyce Routson. “I love the Blue and White meet because they can become a good team together. We added synchronized diving so that it involved teamwork. We’re focusing on fundamentals right now and they’re right on track for the Utah meet next week.”

The swimming events included several odd relays and 25-yard events, such as the 15x25 crazy relay and the 25-yard underwater event. Although times were not counted for any of the athletes, the scrimmage was an opportunity for the teams to get in competition mode and get excited for their official meets.

The Cougars will next compete Friday, Sept. 21, as they host the Utah/BYU Relays.

Blue and White Meet to be Held in Richards Building Pool

PROVO, UT – BYU swim and dive fans will have another opportunity to watch the teams in the Richards Building Pool during the annual Blue and White meet on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 9:30 a.m. MDT.

“The Blue and White meet is the end of a week full of long activities with the team,” said head coach John Brooks. “This year we are trying out a different format for the meet, with 5x75 relays and other odd distances. It should be fun.”

The Cougars have been participating in running relays, obstacle courses, reaction time and plank competitions, pulling and kicking sets and several other activities to prepare for the meet. The swim meet itself will include several unusual events that the teams have not done before, including 25-meter underwater kicks. The dive team will have a meet of their own along with joining the swimmers in the fun events.

Although none of these events will go towards the actual season, it will be a great indicator for the coaches of where the athletes are at in terms of their progress for the upcoming meets.

Admission to this meet is free and all fans are welcomed to come see the teams in friendly competition. Warmup will begin at 9 a.m. and the meet will follow at 9:30.

The swim and dive teams will come together again in the Richards Building Pool the following week on Friday, Sept. 25, at 5 p.m. MDT for relay races against Utah.
