DAVIS, California– Two wins from Tiare Coker assisted the BYU women's swim and dive team in its outdoor loss at UC Davis, 172-128, on Friday afternoon.

“It was a well-fought meet by both teams,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “Our women’s team really stepped up to the plate and won many events. We may not have won the meet, but I think our team knows that they performed well and to the best of their ability. I am proud of what they accomplished.”

Leading the team with two victories was freshman Coker. She improved her season-best time in the 100-meter butterfly, swimming it in 56.50 (56.59 was her time from last week). She also won the women’s 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:52.18.

Winning the second event of the day was another Cougar freshman, Savannah DuPuis, clocking a time of 10:27.13 in the 1000-yard freestyle. She was closely followed by her teammate Vanessa Moffatt, who took second in the race (10:27.42). Moffatt, a junior from Lakewood, Washington, claimed a victory just four events later in the 200-yard butterfly. She improved her time from last week (2:07) to 2:05.63.

BYU's Anna Dahl was named “Swimmer of the Meet”  by her coaches and teammates for her performance in the 200-yard breaststroke. She finished the race in second with a time of 2:22.57. Dahl also competed in the 100-yard breaststroke and placed second with a time of 1:05.16.

Lauren Shaw Taylor and Ashlee Spindler stayed neck-in-neck throughout the meet, achieving second and third place standings for the Cougars in two events. Taylor took second in the 100-yard backstroke (57.07) and Spindler followed in third with a time of 57.81. In the 200-yard backstroke, Taylor once again took the second-place finish (2:04.59) and Spindler touched right after at 2:05.96.

In the women’s 3-meter dive, BYU's Shelby Johnson took her first win of the season with a final score of 246.23. She also participated in the 1-meter event and took sixth with a score of 215.93. Teammate Morgan Mellow, a freshman from Mesa, Arizona took third in the 1-meter event and had a final score of 228.83.

Both BYU men’s and women’s teams will compete on the road against UNLV on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. PTD.

Women's swim and dive swims outdoors at UC Davis

Image

PROVO, Utah– For the first time this season, BYU women’s swim and dive team competes outdoors in a dual at UC Davis on Friday Oct. 28 at 4:00 p.m. PT.

“The last two years we have had very competitive meets with UC Davis,” head BYU swim coach John Brooks said. “They have brought out the best in the women’s team and I expect a close meet!

"It is outdoors, so weather can play a role in the swimming meet. It if it cold, that can play an even bigger role (anticipated 65 degrees)."

This meet will be similar to the dual against Oregon State, where there will be 14 swimming events. However, UC Davis does field a diving team, so there will be two diving events.

UC Davis, like BYU, is a part of the Mountain Pacific Sports Administration and their women’s team was the 2016 MPSF Champion. This will be the first and only meeting for BYU against an MPSF foe until the league championships that will be held in February. The Cougars are looking forward to Friday and challenging the standing champions.
