Tough Home Loss To Miami

PROVO, Utah - The BYU women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to a talented University of Miami team from one of the best soccer conferences in the nation, Friday, in front of 4,633 fans at South Field.

The crowd on Friday is the second largest all-time to attend a game at South Field in BYU women's soccer history.

“It was so great to have so many fans out to support us tonight," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "Unfortunately, we had a lot of opportunities in the first half but just couldn't quite take care of business. Miami won the game on a great shot. She kept the ball on frame, and we were just missing that great shot tonight.”

Both teams came out strong, in what proved to be a very physical match, with Miami receiving five yellow cards throughout the game.

The Cougar offense had early shots on goal from Auna Doria and Jennie Marshall that fell both high and wide. Sophomore Niki Fernandez connected with a loose ball on the baseline that found the back of the net, but the goal was quickly negated after the sideline referee called the ball out of bounds.

Although the Cougars outshot the Hurricanes 15-9, Miami’s Hannah Moehling was the only one to get on the board with a game-winning shot just inside the 18-yard box in the 70th minute.

Collete Jepson, Doria and Marshall led the attack for BYU with goalkeeper McKinzie Olson posting four saves. Along with Moehling’s goal, Miami keeper Vikki Alonzo pulled out the shutout and six saves.

BYU goes on the road next week to take on Idaho State Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in Pocatello, Idaho.

Postgame Quotes

Jennifer Rockwood

“Very disappointing, obviously to lose, but to Miami you have to give them a lot of credit. I thought they really did a great job.”

“Miami is a very good team, they’re extremely athletic and quick. We only had three players that were able to get shots off tonight, and that’s a problem, so we'll work on that for next week. We know there's always ways we can improve.”

Utah Highlights Two Home Games This Week

After starting its season on the road with a tie against No. 19 Washington, the BYU women's soccer team will return home this week for two games against instate rival Utah on Tuesday, August 23, and the University of Miami on Friday, August 26.

Tuesday's Deseret Duel matchup against Utah will kick off at 7 p.m. MT and Friday's game will start at 8 p.m. MT. In anticipation of a large crowd at both games, an extra 1,000 bleachers will be added for fans. All students get into the game for FREE with a BYU I.D. card.

The Cougars play host this week, holding a 0-0-1 record, with Carlee Payne and Dana Oldroyd in the BYU season stats as the first two to record goals for BYU in the 2011 season. Hermann Trophy Candidate Lindsi Lisonbee and goalkeeper McKinzie Olson continue to hold down the defense for BYU as a formidable force to be reckoned with in the backfield.

The Utes come to Provo after their home opener against Cal State Fullerton ended in a scoreless tie and, like the Cougars, went into double overtime. Utah was picked to finished 10th in the Pac-12's preseason coaches poll this season after returning eight starters to a team that finished 4th in the Mountain West Conference last year.

Miami comes to Provo under a new head coach, with two games under its belt and a 1-1 record. The Hurricanes opened their 2011 season against Florida with a 0-2 loss and then defeated Monmouth 3-0. Miami missed its invitation to the ACC tournament last season, with a 9th place finish in the conference, after falling to then-ranked No. 3 Maryland.
