Season Opener Tie Against #19 Washington

Image

SEATTLE - In its 2011 season opener, the BYU women's soccer team battled No. 19 University of Washington to a 2-2 score on the road Friday for their first tie in the new season.

The Cougars came out quickly against the Huskies with a goal from Carlee Payne in just the ninth minute. The junior found the back of the net after a shot from teammate Stacy Bartholomew hit the crossbar and bounced back into play for Payne to finish off.

In the exact same fashion six minutes later, Huskie Brianna Sweeney followed through on a ball that hit the crossbar and found the back of the net for the Washington equalizer. Riding the momentum of their first goal, the Huskies put on the offensive pressure and were rewarded for their hard work. Lindsay Elston hit a shot after a pass from teammate Allie Beahan just outside the box that traveled through traffic and gave a 2-1 advantage to Washington as both teams left the field for halftime.

With BYU now doing the work to catch up and ready after a halftime break, the Cougars fought hard in the opening minutes of the second half and found many great opportunities on goal. The payoff came in the 58th minute when defender Dana Oldroyd followed up on a cross from teammate Jennie Marshall for the final goal of the night. The goal is Oldroyd's second of her career.

After regulation ended in a tie, the teams headed into overtime where the first goal from either team would end the game. The Cougars got the first shot on goal in overtime off a header from Marshall but the attempt was stopped by the Huskie goalkeeper. The first overtime ended in the same score and without incident so a second overtime was also played with no goals from either team.

Marshall led the Cougar squad with six shots on the night, contributing a team total of 21. BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson played the full 110 minutes and had to make two saves in goal.

Coming up next for the Cougars is a two-game home swing starting with in-state rival Utah on Tuesday, August 23, at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast live on BYUtv and online for free at byutv.org/live.

Season Opener for BYU At Washington

Image

PROVO, Utah - The BYU women's soccer team will play its season opener against No. 19 Washington on the road Friday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. PT. The event is both team's season openers.

BYU has played the Huskies five times in the program's history, with their last meeting coming in 2007 on their home field and a 2-1 victory going the way of the Cougars.

The Cougar squad’s nine returning starters are highlighted by 2010 All-American Lindsi Lisonbee, forward standout Carlee Payne and goalie McKinzie Olson who ranked seventh in the nation last season for her goals-against average. Also returning is 2010 Mountain West Conference Tournament MVP Jessica Ringwood, senior Lauren Anderson Cosby and forward Jennie Marshall, who led the team in goals for 2010 with seven.

Washington returns its top goal scorers in Katie Deines, who had nine goals last season and Sarah Martinez, who finished with five. The Huskies were picked to finish fifth in the 2011 Pac-12 preseason coaches poll after going 13-9-2 last season and making a trip to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Women's College Cup.

In preparation for the start of the season, the Cougars played an exhibition at Colorado College on Aug. 13 where they defeated the Tigers 2-1 with goals from Payne and Cosby.
