Double Overtime Tie At Home

PROVO -- The No. 13 BYU women’s soccer team (12-2-2, 3-1-1) extended its home unbeaten streak to 16 games Thursday, with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against conference foe UNLV on South Field.

"We had some great practices this week in preparation for this home game," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "I thought we played really well tonight, other than the most important thing which is to put the ball in the back of the net, but still we controlled most of the game. We got unlucky there at the beginning but everyone still played really well."

The Cougars recorded 26 shots against the Rebels, a new season-high, while holding UNLV to just eight. BYU has now held all of their opponents, but three, to single-shot performances.

"I thought we had a lot of great looks tonight," Rockwood said. "There's no question we did and and we just have to show better composure on our attack. Our forwards want more than anything to score and they just have to believe that they have to step up and get it done."

After dominating the offensive game but finding themselves unsuccessful in scoring, sophomore Cami Jensen netted the equalizer on an unassisted strike in the 37th minute for BYU. It was Jensen’s first season and career goal.

UNLV had gotten on the board first after Macy Jo Harrison snuck a ball past Cougar goalkeeper McKinzie Olson in the fifth minute of action.

With the score tied 1-1 near the end of the second half, the Cougars created numerous goal opportunities and narrowly missed taking the lead on several attacks. A Jessica Ringwood shot that ricocheted off of the right post provided sophomore Carlee Payne with an attempt on goal, but was wide left as the game headed into overtime.

Two overtime periods went scoreless despite the Cougars outshooting the Rebels 6-4. This is the third time this season BYU has seen double-overtime action.

Ringwood led the Cougars with 10 shots on the night. Ashleigh Shoughro led the Rebels with three shots.

The Cougars return to South Field Saturday for Senior Night to face off against San Diego State, who is coming off of a 1-0 win against Utah, in the final home game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

"San Diego State is a great team and we're excited to play at home again," Rockwood said. "We want to bounce back and again try to play our best when we step on the field Saturday night."
