Shumway Nets Two for Cougars

Image

COLORADO SPRINGS -- Kassidy C. Shumway netted two goals for the No. 9 BYU Cougars as they outlasted the cold weather and captured a 3-1 victory at Weber State for their final non-conference game, Wednesday.

The Cougars are on a 13-game unbeaten streak with an 15-2-2, 5-0-1 record.

A goal from freshman Carlee Payne after only one minute of play in the first half would set the pace for the rest of the Cougar team as a dominant offense finished off the Wildcats. BYU out-shot Weber State 24-6.

Payne added two assists to her goal in the victory over the Wildcats and now has 12 goals and nine assists this season. Payne has also scored in 11 of BYU’s 19 games and leads the MWC in total number of goals.

BYU’s second goal came just four minutes later when junior midfielder Shumway put the ball in the net off an assist from Payne. Shumway finished the game with eight shots.

A goal from Kelly Robinson, her first of the season, for the Wildcats in the 11th minute would be their one-and-only score in the contest. The Cougars would head into the half up 2-1.

Shumway netted a second goal for BYU in the second half off another assist from Payne. Shumway has now scored six goals in the 2009 season.

A third goal from Shumway was called off sides in the 75th minute.

In the BYU victory, 22 players saw action with 13 of them each taking at least one shot.

The Cougars, currently ranked first in the MWC regular season standings, look to continue their unbeaten conference record when they take on league foe Wyoming, on Halloween at South Field at 1 p.m.
