Win Over Lobos Gives Cougars MWC Lead

Image

PROVO -- Kristi Dow-Jackson scored the first goal of her BYU career as the No. 11 BYU women’s soccer team stayed undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 win over New Mexico on Thursday at South Field.

Dow-Jackson, a junior, came off the bench to score in the 35th minute on a crossing assist from junior Kassidy C. Shumway. Dow-Jackson’s initial shot was deflected as two defenders and the New Mexico goalkeeper converged at the top of the goalbox, but Dow-Jackson made sure the second try slipped through, scoring on her third shot of the season.

“I just thought, this isn’t going to get away,” Dow-Jackson said of the goal. “I’m going to put this in.”

As a team the Cougars played one of their most complete games of the season. The crowd of 1,716 watched BYU match its season-high of three goals as the Cougars’ seven shots in the second period wore down the Lobo side.

In addition to Dow-Jackson’s goal, several other Cougars posted other career and season firsts. Freshman defender Stacy Bartholomew also earned her own career first, notching her first ever assist in the 54th minute of the contest. Bartholomew, originally recruited as a forward out of Timpanogos High in Orem, battled two separate ACL tears over the past two seasons before earning a spot as a starting fullback for the Cougars.

“Stacy has really stepped in well for us,” said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “She deserves the success she has had this year.”

After switching inside from 40 yards away, Bartholomew looped a pass into senior Alyssa Vander Veur. Vander Veur turned the ball around a defender, putting in a low shot underneath the diving keeper for her second goal of the year.

After finding the back of the net once in 2008, senior Kelsea Kakadelas added her first goal of 2009 and third of her career late in the 65th minute for the Cougars. New Mexico cleared a corner kick by BYU’s Lauren Anderson, but Kakadelas trapped the ball at the top of the box. Letting the ball bounce once, Kakadelas shot a rocket off the bounce and into the top left corner of the goal, giving the New Mexico defense no chance to regroup.

“We talked before the game about putting games away early,” Dow-Jackson said. “We don’t want to keep it close and just keep winning games by one goal.”

In all, the Cougars outshot the Lobos 13-7 and had six corners to the Lobos’ two. BYU stands at 12-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference, BYU is now in lone possession of first place in the standings with ten points.

BYU has not lost in well over a month, going 9-0-1 in the last ten games. The Cougars will continue their weekend homestand this Saturday, hosting TCU at 7 p.m. at South Field.
