Freshman Goal Leads to Upset Over No. 20 UConn on the Road

University Park, PA -- After an almost completely scoreless game, the Cougars found their goal in the last five minutes of the game to take the 1-0 win over No. 20 Connecticut.

"We played with a lot of heart tonight and we were anxious to get back on the field after our last game," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We got a lot of great minutes from our bench and it was a great win over such a dominant soccer program."

A corner kick from sophomore Lauren Anderson to teammate and freshman Carlee Payne, who would head the ball in over the hands of the Connecticut goalie, would be BYU’s first goal of the game, first goal of the 2009 regular season and the winning shot for the Cougars.

"It was a great battle and it’s amazing what one goal can do for the team and how it can be the difference in your attitude," Rockwood said. "Carlee's main job is to be close to the goalie and get the ball in and that's what she did."

The Huskies had zero shots on goal in the entire game thanks to a stalwart Cougar defense. Led by Hermann Watch List Nominee and Preseason All-America Andrea Willis, along with Lindsi Lisonbee and Kelsea Kakadelas played the entire game and held the line that Connecticut couldn't get through.

Up front, Payne led the Cougars with two shots on the Connecticut goal. Kristi Dow-Jackson and Kelsea Kakadelas each had a shot on goal as well.

The Cougars had two corner kicks in the first half while Connecticut wouldn’t get their first corner kick until the 53-minute mark, in the second half.

Tournament play for BYU continues on Monday at noon against No. 14 West Virginia.
