Corner Kick Goal Lifts Cougars Over Rebels

Image

PROVO -- A barrage of corner kicks and shots on goal launched by the BYU women’s soccer team Thursday night overloaded the visiting UNLV Rebels as the Cougars walked away with a 1-0 victory.

A dominant performance was displayed by the Cougars who had 15 shots on goal compared to the Rebels’ two and six corner kicks to UNLV’s three on a cold night in front of 1,457 fans. BYU had a 28-6 shot advantage in the game.

At the 52:12 mark in the second half, BYU freshman forward Lauren Anderson centered a corner kick to junior Andrea Willis, who headed the ball forward to midfielder Whitney Feller, who subsequently headed the ball into the corner of the net for the score.

“I thought it was a solid team performance on that play,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “Whitney is working hard for us and there were some nice assists. We had many opportunities throughout the game to put more in, but we’ll take one.”

At halftime, BYU only had one corner kick but had eight shots on goal to UNLV’s zero and thirteen shots to the Rebels’ one. Going into the game, the Cougars’ highest shots on goal amount in a game was nine, which was almost eclipsed by halftime. The Cougars are now 8-0 this season when scoring first.

UNLV was not able to get into any kind of rhythm offensively as the ball was mostly kept to the Rebel side of the field. The Cougar defense and goalie McKinzie Olson recorded their third-straight shutout.

“Our defense was solid and gave a great effort,” Rockwood said. “Our goalie is gaining more confidence each game and the defense is finding ways to keep teams out of rhythm.”

Sophomore Kassidy Christensen recorded five shots on goal, Katie Fellows-Hodgkiss had four and Katie Larkin and Feller each had two.

Each team had eight fouls, displaying emotion between two increasingly heated Mountain West rivals.

“UNLV has had a lot of success,” Rockwood said. “Their goalkeeper is very good and athletic. We had a lot of shots that didn’t go in for us, but we’re happy with one.”

With the win the Cougars improve to 9-5-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference. UNLV drops to 9-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the MWC.

The Cougars are next in action on Saturday, October 11, when they take on San Diego State at 8:00 p.m. Fans can get into the game for $1 with their ticket stub from the BYU-New Mexico football game earlier in the day.
