Streak Continues as Cougars Top UNM 2-1

Image

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (October 18, 2008) -- Goals from senior forwards Katie Fellows Hodgkiss and Katie Larkin propelled the Cougars past New Mexico 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque.

"We got off to a good start," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "New Mexico is a tough team and pressured us as the game went on, but I thought that this was one of our better road games and we played very well."

Hodgkiss got the Cougars on the board first 32 minutes into the game when she launched a shot from about 40 yards out in to the top right corner of the goal. Hodgkiss' shot was the only shot the Cougars registered in the first half. The score remained 1-0 into halftime. The goal was her third of the season.

"Katie's goal was an unbelievable strike," said Rockwood. "Just a great goal."

New Mexico Freshman midfielder Amanda Collins scored on a cross through the box just two minutes into the second half to tie the game at one. The goal was the first the Cougars had allowed in five games and the first goal allowed in league play. BYU has outscored their opponents 11-1 in MWC games.

Larkin's game winning goal came 11 minutes later. She received a throw-in in the box from sophomore forward Kassidy Christensen and turned and scored on a shot to the far side of the goal. Larkin increases her team-high goals scored total to seven in 2008. Christensen has four assists. The goal was Larkin's second game-winning goal in conference play.

New Mexico outshot the Cougars 12-6, but the BYU back line again held strong, despite being outshot for the second consecutive game. Freshman keeper McKinzie Olson had one save in 90:00 in goal.

The win pushes the team's winning streak to six games. With two league games left, BYU is still unbeaten (5-0) in the MWC and in first place in the league standings. The Cougars moved to 12-5-0 overall with the win, while the Lobos drop to 7-5-4 overall (2-3-0 MWC).

"We are looking forward to a week to rest and get ready," said Rockwood. "We're focused on Air Force and the girls are excited to come and play home."

The Cougars return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m., when they face off against Air Force. In-state for Weber State visits South Field on the following Tuesday, Oct. 28, for a match that will also begin at 7:00 p.m. Both games will be televised live on BYUTV/KBYUTV. A live stat feed and video feed will be available for the Air Force game, and a live stat feed for the Weber State game for fans who want to follow the team online.

On the road against TCU, New Mexico

Image

PROVO -- After improving their Mountain West Conference record to 3-0 and posting two more wins at home, the first-place Cougars head on the road to face TCU in Fort Worth on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 12:00 p.m. before heading to Albuquerque to face the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday, Oct. 18, also at 12:00 p.m.

The Cougars are off to their best start in the MWC since going undefeated (8-0) in 2002. The team beat UNLV 1-0 and San Diego State 2-0 to improve to 6-0 at home this season. BYU has outscored conference opponents 8-0, and out-shot them 67 to 27. The team has stiffened their defense and not allowed a goal since Sept. 25. Senior forward Katie Larkin leads the Cougars with six goals. Freshman forward Lauren Anderson has seven assists and four goals. Freshman goalie McKinzie Olson has lowered her season goals-against-average to 0.72.

After beginning the season 8-1-1 in non-conference play, TCU has notched a 2-1-0 record in conference play. The Horned Frogs lost to Wyoming 1-0 and beat Air Force 3-1 last week. The team is led by freshman forward Jordan Calhoun, who has scored 12 goals in 13 games and has two assists. Junior forward Lizzy Karoly has eight goals and five assists in the team’s games.

TCU keepers have only allowed nine goals on the season, helping the team to a 10-2-1 record (2-1-0 MWC).

The Lobos are off to a strong start, with a 7-3-4 record (2-1-0 MWC). The team swept both games they played last week, beating both Wyoming and Air Force by a score of 1-0. Senior forward Hannah Hand has eight assists to lead the team. Sophomore midfielder/forward Alexis Ball, freshman forward Jennifer Williams and freshman defender Zaneta Wyne all have four goals.

Live stat feeds will be available for both games, and an All-Access video feed is available for the TCU game. All feeds can be accessed by visiting www.byucougars.com/soccer_w/.

The Cougars return to South Field on Saturday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m., when they play Air Force. The game will be broadcast live on BYUTV/KBYU.
