BYU Falls to No. 22 Cal on the Road, 2-1

Image

PROVO -- A late goal from senior forward Katie Larkin wasn't enough as the Cougars fell to Cal 2-1 on the road late Thursday evening.

"We were outplayed by a very good Cal team," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We had a lot of opportunities to score but weren't able to put the ball in the net."

After a scoreless first half Cal got on the board quickly with two goals scored within six minutes of each other. Both goals were scored by freshman defender Danielle Brunache.

Larkin scored on a penalty kick during the 64th minute. It is the second time she has scored on a penalty kick this season.

The Cougars were outshot by the Bears 18-6.

Freshman keeper McKinzie Olson recorded eight saves. "Olson did a great job of keeping us in the game during the first half," said Rockwood. "She made some tremendous saves."

The loss drops the Cougars to 6-5-0 on the season.

The Cougars next travel to Logan Utah, to take on the Utah State Aggies on Oct. 2. The game will start at 4:00 p.m. and a live stat feed will be available by visiting www.byucougars.com/soccer_w. The game will be the last non-conference game for the team.

BYU then begins Mountain West Conference play when it faces in-state rival Utah in Salt Lake City on Oct. 4. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m. The game will be the first between the schools for the 2008 edition of the annual 'Deseret First Duel' duel competition.

The team's next home game is Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m. The Cougars will face MWC foe UNLV.
