“We knew it was going to be a battle,” coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “We’ve been through a lot these first four games and come out on top in most of them and we’ve learned, which is what the preseason is for.”

The first half went back-and-forth with both teams having the same number of corner kicks and fouls and BYU having five shots on goal to Arizona’s three. The Cougars took control early and recorded the first two shots on goal, but the Wildcats quickly struck back.

Twenty minutes into the half, Arizona looked the more dangerous team with Sally Thurner sending a long-range shot inches over the crossbar The Cougars responded late in the half with Becca Riddle’s shot from outside the box skipping to the right of the Wildcats’ open goal.

After a scoreless first half, both teams came out strong with BYU having a few early chances. A through ball sent Katie Fellows Hodgkiss on a breakaway 15 minutes into the half. Hodgkiss beat the keeper and crossed the ball to Kassidy Chrsitensen who headed it just over the bar.

Riddle was taken out of the game in the 65th minute after receiving a red card, forcing the Cougars to play a man down the remainder of the game. Despite the disadvantage, BYU was able to get a goal and the lead with 12 minutes left. Lauren Anderson turned the ball at the endline and crossed it in front of the face of the goal where Christensen directed it into the left corner.

“I was proud the girls came out strong when they were a man down,” Rockwood said. “It’s not an easy thing to do.”

Arizona never gave up and kept freshman goalkeeper McKinzie Olson busy. With three minutes left, Wildcat London King received a through ball and maneuvered it into the back of the net, but the sideline official called the ball offside and ended the celebration before it began.

The Cougars were able to hold off the Wildcats’ offense in the closing minutes and earn another win. The team will continue its season in Virginia Thursday where it will face William and Mary. A live stat feed of the game will be available at www.byucougars.com.

The Cougars next return to action at South Field on Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m., when they will face the Idaho State Bengals.

PROVO -- The No. 18 Cougars open defense of South Field this weekend when they face off against the University of Georgia on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:00, and the Arizona Wildcats on Sept. 1 at 4 p.m.

The Georgia game is the first women’s soccer game at South Field since the renovations that took place over the summer.

Junior forward Carrie Patterson, a 2007 second-team NSCAA All-American and a member of the 2008 Hermann Trophy watchlist leads Georgia. Patterson led the Bulldogs in goals scored (13), points (32), shots (67), and was tied for the lead in assists with six. Georgia beat Mercer 2-0 on Aug. 26. Historically, the Bulldogs have struggled in the Mountain and Pacific time zones, going just 2-5-2.

Arizona features a young squad that had 19 underclassmen last year. Senior forward London King returns as the team’s key weapon; she scored four goals and had eight points last year. The Wildcats are coming off of a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly on Sunday, Aug. 24.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early to both games to enjoy giveaways, contests, handmade balloon animals and t-shirts and soccer magnets for the first 1,000 fans.

Monday, the first 2,000 fans will receive pom-poms provided by the Utah Youth Soccer Association. There will be t-shirt giveaways, contests and competitions with prizes during both of the games.

Students can get in to either game free by presenting their student ID card at the gate.

Cougar fans can join the official Women's Soccer texting group by texting the words "WSOC" to the number 83043. Members of the group will receive reminders about game times, information about ticket discounts and other promotions.
