PROVO -- In the BYU women's soccer team's (14-2-2, 4-2-0) last home game of the season, freshman Kassidy Christensen scored her third game-winning goal in as many games in a 1-0 win over New Mexico (7-5-4, 1-3-2) Saturday at South Stadium.
Recording assists on the goal were senior Jessica Aquino-Greenfield (1) and junior Katie Larkin (5). Christensen's goal was her sixth of the year, which is second most on the team. Larkin's fifth assist leads the team. Senior goalkeeper Erika Woodbury recorded her 11th shutout of the season, which is one away from the single-season record she set last year.
"This was a must win game for us tonight to insure a spot in the Mountain West Conference Tournament," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We're a possession team, but sometimes to a fault. Tonight we were more direct and it was one of our better performances."
With twenty minutes left in the game New Mexico was assessed a yellow card just outside the BYU penalty area. The free kick was forwarded to freshman Nicole Urry on the left side at midfield, and then to freshman Becca Riddle.
Riddle pushed the ball up to Aquino-Greenfield who dribbled between defenders and threaded the ball to Larkin. Larkin one-touched it to Christensen in front of the goal, and Christensen drilled it to the back of the net.
"I'm not as scared out there as I used to be," Christensen said. "I think I probably had a little too much adrenaline out there, but it was great to get another goal and another win."
When all was said and done, Larkin led all shooters with five shots and four on goal. Christensen followed with three shots and two on goal. In total, BYU outshot UNM 17-5. The Cougar defense held the Lobos to only one shot on goal as a team.
The Cougars will play their last game of the season at UNLV Friday before returning home to host the MWC Tournament Nov. 7-10.
