Cougars Drop First Heartbreaker

Image

PROVO -- Despite allowing only four shots and only one on goal against Utah (9-2-3, 1-0-1) on Saturday, No. 14 BYU (11-1-2, 1-1-0) lost its first game of the season 1-0 at South Stadium in front of more than 3,300 people in frigid conditions.

The Cougars outshot the Utes 10-4 and tallied five shots on goal in the game. Freshman Becca Riddle led the charge with three shots. The impressive BYU defense did not allow Utah's Adele Letro, who leads the Mountain West Conference in goals scored, to fire even one shot in the entire game.

"I was so pleased with the way we played," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "Sometimes the game comes down to one shot, and tonight it did. Our girls played with a lot of heart and gave us a legitimate chance to win the game."

It was in the 60th minute that BYU came to face its first deficit of the season. Utah's Kelly Isleib hit a low cross from the left side into the BYU penalty area where a diving Melissa Crespo was able to get a head on the ball and sneak it past Cougar keeper Erika Woodbury. Until that time, BYU had not trailed in any game during the 2007 season.

The victory gave Utah six points in the newly created Deseret First Duel rivalry series between the Utes and Cougars. The Duel awards points to the winner of head-to-head competitions and will recognize an annual overall champion at the end of the 2007-08 year. After two events BYU trails Utah 3-6. The next rivalry series event will take place Nov. 9 in women's volleyball.

Next on the Cougar schedule are San Diego State and Air Force, both on the road, next Thursday and Saturday, respectively. BYU will return home for its final regular season match at South Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 27 against New Mexico. The MWC Tournament will also be held at South Stadium November 7-10.
