History Repeats, BYU Wins on Larkin Goal

Image

TUCSON -- For the eighth time this season BYU story is the same; the No. 16 Cougars (10-0-2) won on another goal from Hermann Trophy candidate Katie Larkin, this time against Arizona (5-6-0) Saturday in at 1-0 win in Tucson.

Larkin's goal was her ninth of the season and eighth game-winner. She leads the team in points with 22, shots with 39, and is tied for the lead in assists with two. The shutout was the team's ninth of the year, and senior keeper Erika Woodbury is three shutouts away from tying the BYU single-season shutout record of 12, which Woodbury herself set in 2006.

"It was a good battle against a very good team," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We played great team defense. Our back line was busy tonight, but they did a great job. Larkin keeps doing what she always does, and this was a great win for us."

Arizona became the first team in 2007 to fire more shots than BYU with the Wildcats hitting 11 to the Cougars' eight. Arizona was also awarded seven corner kicks to BYU's none.

Mountain West Conference play will get under way next week as the Cougars will host TCU and Utah at South Stadium on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Live stats will be available for both games, and Saturday?s game will be shown live on BYUTV.

Image

PROVO -- The undefeated No. 16 BYU women's soccer team will host in-state rival Utah State on Thursday at 7 p.m. at South Stadium, then hit the road to face Arizona in Tucson at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

BYU's Katie Larkin leads the team in scoring with eight goals and was named Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week Monday. Fellow Hermann Trophy candidate Jessica Harmon-Carter and goalkeeper Erika Woodbury anchor the defense that has only allowed two goals in ten games.

Junior forward Katie Fellows, who suffered a concussion against Washington on Sept. 24 will likely see at least some playing time in this week's games.

Senior Dana Peart leads the Aggies in goals scored with five on the season and has 15 in her career. In total, Utah State has been outscored 15-11 this season.

The Wildcats are led by freshman Jasmin Day who has four goals, nine points, and 14 shots on the year. She has played in all ten games, but has only started seven.

Thursday's game against Utah State will be "Thirsty Thursday", and fans can buy hot chocolate and water for just $1 apiece. BYU "Y" lot parking will be available after 4 p.m., and ticket prices are $5 for adults and $4 for children. Families, recreation soccer teams, high school teams, and singles wards can all get in for $15 dollars.
