Season Shutout Continues, Cougars Pounce 49ers

PROVO -- Long Beach State became the fourth team in as many games this season to not score a goal against the No. 24 BYU women's soccer team Tuesday as the Cougars beat the 49ers at South Stadium 1-0.

In total, BYU again more than doubled the shots of their opponent with 14 to only six for Long Beach State. BYU also had five corner kicks to the 49ers' one.

"We've played a tough schedule so far, and Long Beach is probably the best team we've played," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "Defensively, Erika Woodbury makes great decisions, and Jessica (Harmon-Carter) and Andrea (Willis) combine with Woodbury to make a back three that are very hard to get past."

The lone goal of the game came from Hermann Trophy candidate Katie Larkin, a junior from Draper, Utah (Alta HS). Fellow Hermann Trophy candidate Jessica Harmon-Carter cleared a ball out of BYU's own box with 21 minutes left and Larkin was the only player to catch up to it.

A defender tackled Larkin from behind while in the box and was given a red card for the takedown. Larkin was awarded her second penalty kick of the season and kicked it to the lower left corner past the goalkeeper and improves to 2-2 in penalty-kick situations.

"It was fun to play a team like Long Beach," Larkin said. "They were tough, but we keep getting better every day. I'll take the win with the penalty kick, but I know we're going to start scoring a lot more than that."

BYU was not without its chances to score goals the traditional way. Junior Katie Fellows hit a laser off the crossbar five minutes into the game, and Larkin threatened again with 25 minutes left in the first half with a shot off the left post.

The 49ers threatened with 39 minutes left in the game on a free kick from eight feet outside the box, but Woodbury, the BYU all-time saves leader, was able to pull it in.

With the win, BYU improves to 3-0-1 on the year. The Cougars will remain at home against Wisconsin on Friday at 7 p.m. at South Stadium. After the game against Wisconsin, BYU will play at home five of the next six games with the only road game taking place at in-state foe Weber State on Sept. 19.

PROVO -- The No. 19 BYU women's soccer team will play its first regular-season home game Tuesday at 7 p.m. at South Stadium against the No. 23 Long Beach State 49ers.

Powered by an aggressive offense and a stingy defense, BYU is atop the Mountain West Conference standings with a 2-0-1 record and has not allowed a goal all season. The last time BYU allowed zero goals in its first three games occurred in 2003 when the team did not allow a goal until its fifth game of the season.

Cougar fans shattered the attendance almost one year ago to the day on Sept. 8, 2006 when 4,742 fans came to cheer BYU to a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 21 Colorado. The crowd was the second largest for a women's athletic event in Cougar history. BYU finished with an average of 2,070 fans per game to finish third in the nation in that cat egory and are looking forward to equaled and better crowd support this season.

Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students without an All-Sport Pass. Students with an All-Sport Pass get in free. BYU "Y" lot parking will be available to the public after 4 p.m.
