Larkin Scores in Overtime Heroics

Image

LAWRENCE -- Hermann Trophy candidate Katie Larkin, a junior from Draper, Utah (Alta HS), scored a goal on a penalty kick in the 99th minute of the No. 19 BYU at Kansas women?s soccer game Thursday for the Cougars' second overtime, 1-0 win in as many games.

"We as a team could feel a goal was coming, but we were having a hard time knocking one in," Larkin said. "After 90 minutes, we were sure we would get one in overtime. Today was definitely a confidence booster, and I know our team will be looking to get the ball in the back of the net against a ranked Colorado team."

BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said she was surprised the game had to go into overtime because her team had so many promising chances at the goal. She gave credit to senior midfielders Carolyn Swenson of Kaysville, Utah (Davis HS) and Natalie Nate-Henriksen of Salt Lake City, Utah (Brighton HS) for their outstanding play and ability to keep the game balanced.

"I was really pleased with the way we played, especially in the second half," Rockwood said. "We corrected some things we needed to after the first game, and the girls never stopped playing hard."

BYU more than doubled Kansas' shot attempts and shots on goal, 19-8 and 11-4, respectively. The Cougars also had ten corner kicks to the Jayhawks' six. Thirteen of BYU's 19 shots and seven of the team?s corner kicks came after the first half.

Sophomore Kelsea Kakadelas of Carlsbad, Calif., led all shooters with three out of four shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Erika Woodbury of Murrieta, Calif., recorded four saves on her clean sheet and increased the BYU career saves record to 197.

The Cougars' next hurdle will be at No. 20 Colorado on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Buffaloes are coming off of a 4-2 victory over Utah. Live stats will be available at http://www.cubuffs.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&KEY=&SPID=259&SPSID=3932.
