Freshmen Clinch First Cougar Win

LANSING -- On Friday, in the 94th minute of the BYU women's soccer team's first game of the season, freshman Kassidy Christensen (Woods Cross HS) scored a goal, assisted by fellow-freshman Becca Riddle (Hillcrest HS), to beat Michigan State on the Spartans' home field 1-0.

"It didn"t really hit me until I saw everyone rushing towards me," Christensen said after scoring in her first regular season collegiate game. "I was jogging with Becca (Riddle) at the end and I knew I just had to make sure I was at the back post. She crossed it and I was there to knock it in."

The Cougars outshot their opponents 14-10 and 10-5 in shots on goal. Riddle topped all shooters with three shots on goal, and corner kicks were even at four apiece.

In 2006, BYU goalkeeper Erika Woodbury set the BYU career saves record at 188 and tallied a record 12 shutouts in the season. On Friday she increased the career saves record to 193 and is one game closer to making another run at the season-shutout record as well.

"We got off to a good start, but we had a tough time getting behind the Michigan State defense," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We kept fighting even when things weren?t going our way. Woodbury made two great saves that kept us in the game, and in the end it was a good win for us that did not come easy."

The Cougars' next challenge will be at Kansas on Thursday, Sept. 6 and then at Colorado on Saturday, Sept. 8. The team will then return home to its electrifying home crowd for the home opener against Long Beach State on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at South Stadium.
