Larkin, Swenson Score in Conference Opener

Image

FT. WORTH -- No. 9 BYU (10-1-1, 1-0-0) opened up Mountain West Conference play Thursday in Texas, defeating TCU (5-6-1, 0-1-0) 2-0 behind the feet of Katie Larkin and Carolyn Swenson.

"We really got off to a great start, and it's nice to start conference play this way," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We had a phenomenal first half. We had opportunities to score several times in the first half, but couldn't get the ball to go in. TCU is a strong team, and they had a real dangerous player who gave us a lot of trouble in the second period."

Larkin scored the game-winner at the 14:42 mark when she teamed up with senior Annie Zwahlen. The pair operated a give-and-go to perfection as Larkin hit an open Zwhalen, who immediately flipped it back to Larkin. Larkin took a couple of dribbles, set herself up and shot a nice left-footed ball.

"It was a great shot," Rockwood said. "She put the ball in the upper left-hand corner of the net. It was perfect. I don't think there would have been a chance for anyone to have even gotten a hand on the ball."

Swenson put icing on the cake when she scored again with seven minutes remaining. The Horned Frogs had pushed all their players up, hoping to even the score. The ball popped loose and Swenson took advantage of the breakaway to net the late goal.

The Cougars outshot the Frogs 23-8 on the game, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeeper

Erika Woodbury made 3 saves, while Frog keeper Katy Buchanan blocked three Cougar attempts.

BYU heads to the University of Utah on Saturday to face the Utes at 1 p.m. Last year, the two teams drew even, 1-1, after two overtime periods.

"Obviously there is a lot of emotion going into the Utah game," Rockwood said. "They've had a great season so far. It's always a very close game, usually coming down to one shot. We are looking forward to it. It's always a great matchup between two great soccer teams."
