Bowman Propels Team to Victory

Image

SEATTLE -- Senior Brooke Bowman took her turn as the Cougar hero Thursday evening, scoring the game-winning goal and propelling No. 14 BYU (7-1-0) to a 1-0 victory over Washington (4-5-0) in the first round of the Pac-10/Mountain West Challenge at Husky Soccer Field.

The Cougars capitalized on a UW misplay in the 35th minute that set up the lone goal. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen was whistled for a violation after being forced to handle a hard pass back at goal from a teammate. Goalkeepers are not allowed to use their hands on passes from teammates. The result was a free kick from the spot of the violation, an infrequent occurrence as penalty kicks usually ensue from fouls inside the box.

Katie Larkin took the BYU free kick from 12 yards away on the left side of the box. She touched a short pass to Brooke Bowman who blasted a shot into the goal at 34:14.

Although the Huskies outshot BYU 18-11, including 14-4 in the second half, the Cougars were able to hold on to the one-point lead. Goalkeeper Erika Woodbury was a large part of that success, saving eight shots on goal in the second half. Washington keeper Katy Dowling was only forced to save three shots all night, though letting an important shot past her.

Bowman led BYU with four shots, while Annie Zwahlen and Kelsea Kakadelas each added three shots apiece. Dani Bridges led the Huskies' with six shots, followed by Melissa Beal and Veronica Perez with four shots each.

The Cougars remain in Seattle to play Washington State Friday at 4:30 p.m. BYU will then return home Monday to face Arizona at 8 p.m. The game will be televised live on BYU TV.
