Vander Veur, Fellows Score Over No. 15 Georgia

ATHENS -- Two sophomores scored as No. 20 BYU (3-0) upset 15th-ranked Georgia (2-1), 2-0, Friday evening in Athens, forcing the Bulldogs to give up their first two goals of the season.

"We don't talk a lot about rankings, but we knew they were an extremely talented team that is certainly on their way up," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We knew how important this game was, and it turned out to be a great battle between two very good teams. Things are definitely going well for us."

BYU took a 1-0 advantage in the 36th minute when Katie Larkin took a shot off Bobbi Tillotson's corner kick, and Alyssa Vander Veur deflected the ball past Georgia's keeper.

The second goal came in the 63rd minute from Katie Fellows as she took advantage of a breakdown in the Bulldog defense and put away a shot from just inside the penalty box.

BYU did a good job controlling the midfield, not allowing Georgia to get numbers forward and only giving up three Bulldog shots on goal.

"Our defense was unbelievable tonight," Rockwood said. "They were a talented team with some very skilled forwards, but we kept them away from our goal. I was very proud of our team."

The Cougars outshot Georgia 15-13 in total shots and 5-3 in shots on goal. Corner kicks went in the Bulldogs' favor, as did fouls, 8-7.

BYU returns to South Stadium Friday and Saturday with games against Colorado and Fresno State, respectively. Game times are slated for 7 p.m. Friday's game will be televised live on BYUTV.

BYU Hosts Idaho State, Faces First Road Opponent

Image

PROVO -- No. 23 BYU (1-0-0) plays its second home game of the season Tuesday against Idaho State (1-1-0) at 7 p.m., before traveling to Georgia to face the No. 18 Bulldogs (2-0-0) Friday at 7 p.m.

The Cougars pulled out a 1-0 win over Weber State in a four-hour home-opener on Saturday caused by lightening delays and stadium lighting malfunctions. BYU looks to strengthen its attack this week as the new mix of players find their rhythm together. The Cougars' starting lineup welcomes five new players, including two sophomores and two freshmen.

Tuesday's game will be the sixth meeting between BYU and Idaho State with the last encounter coming in 2004 when the Bengals defeated BYU 3-1 in Idaho. Friday's game will be the first matchup between Georgia and the Cougars.

Live stats for Tuesday's game will be available at Go Cougars!.
