Swenson Nets Game Winner

PROVO -- The No. 12 BYU women's soccer team (15-1-1, 4-1-0) is accustomed to players stepping up and making the big play. Thursday evening was no different, as sophomore Carolyn Swenson scored the game-winner to defeat UNLV (9-5-3, 4-1-0), 1-0, in Las Vegas.

"I'm really excited," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "This was a huge win for us. UNLV is an excellent team. It is hard to win on the road, especially against such a talented team."

The game was a battle with both teams playing with great hustle and energy, but neither team able to capitalize in the first half of action. BYU finished the half with 10 shots, only three of which were on goal. BYU kept battling, however, knowing its opportunities would come.

The time came when No. 7 turned on her lightening speed.

Swenson showed off her quickness in the 63rd minute, scrambling to collect a loose ball and then driving the ball down the left sideline, firing off a loft toward the net. The ball bounced off Rebel goalkeeper Jenna Huff, marking Swenson's third of the season.

BYU only had three shots and one shot on goal in the second half, although that was all the Cougars needed to pull out the victory.

The Cougars travel to San Diego State on Saturday, before returning to Provo to play their last home game against Utah next Friday. Saturday's game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. (MDT).

Commenting on the BYU-SDSU game, Rockwood said, "We'll keep doing the same things. Last week we spent time working on our combination work between our midfielders and forwards, which paid off. Our combination set is the best it has ever been in the BYU program."
