PROVO -- No. 6 BYU (11-1-1, 0-1-0) opened up MWC play Thursday with a 1-0 loss to the University of New Mexico (4-3-3, 1-0-0), at South Stadium in a game where the Cougars just could not seem to put everything together at the right time.

BYU saw numerous opportunities in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. The Cougars outshot the Lobos 6-1 in the first half and 9-3 on the game, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

"We didn't get the job done in the first half," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We controlled most of the game, but that doesn't mean anything at the end of the game. We were too content in the first half."

New Mexico came out with added intensity in the second half, scoring the lone goal in the 54th minute when Ashley Lowery found a wide-open Kristine Sweat, who drew out goalkeeper Erika Woodbury and buried the ball into the net. The goal marked the first time this season the Cougars found themselves trailing.

In the 65th minute Jaime Rendich Beck tried to even the score with a high-arching shot, but the New Mexico goalie stretched out to barely make the critical save.

In the end, it just wasn't the Cougars' night.

"The ball didn't bounce our way tonight," Rockwood said. "Some games [the shots] go in, sometimes they don't. We'll bounce back."

The perfect time for the Cougars to bounce back is Saturday when BYU challenges TCU (7-4-0) at 7 p.m., on South Stadium's field.
