Soccer Topples Arizona State

Image

PROVO -- Thanks to the balanced attack of the Cougar offense and stellar defense by sophomore Erika Woodbury, BYU (10-0-1) defeated Arizona State (5-4-1), 3-1, Thursday in Arizona.

"It was an excellent game," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "They are a tremendous team, definitely the most offensively dynamic team we've seen this year. We stepped up to the challenge. Everyone just did their part and played their roles. I'm so proud of them."

Woodbury proved why she was recently named the Defensive Mountain West Player of the Week, as she saved all five shots Arizona State took on goal during the first half of action. The Sun Devils pounded the ball at the net all night, but Woodbury never let a ball past her, keeping her team in the game and saving a total of eight shots.

BYU came out in the second half with something to prove and absolutely unloaded on the Sun Devils. BYU's first goal came in 67th minute with two freshmen providing the advantage. Sending the ball up field off a free kick, Jessica Harmon found Katie Larkin for a beautiful shot that soared right over the head of Arizona State's goalkeeper. The shot was only BYU's second shot on goal for the game, and the first of the half. It was also Larkin's second goal of the season.

In the 78th minute Harmon again floated a free kick pass to Natalie Nate, who headed the ball in for her third goal of the season.

Four minutes later, Bobbi Tillotson kicked a perfectly executed high-arching pass to the opposite goal post that found Jaime Rendich Beck. The header marked Rendich Beck's sixth goal.

Arizona State made a run late in the game when Manya Makoski scored off a one touch at five yards out. Elizabeth Bogus assisted the goal, but the effort was not enough as the Cougars ran away with yet another victory.

Arizona State outshot BYU 17-10, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.

"Our team was tested in a lot of ways tonight," Rockwood said. "Our midfielders had to cover so much ground. Erika (Woodbury) probably had her most challenging game of the year. She had some huge, big time saves. It was a great night."

The Cougars play No. 21 Arizona on Saturday at 8 p.m. (MDT), in Tucson.

BYU Travels to the Valley of the Sun

Image

PROVO -- After beating three ranked opponents in 12 days, No. 12 BYU (9-0-1) travels to the Valley of the Sun, seeking to take down Arizona State (5-3-1) and Arizona (5-2-2), another ranked opponent at No. 21 Arizona this weekend. The Cougars play the Sun Devils on Thursday and the Wildcats on Saturday. Both games are slated for 6 p.m., MDT. Live Stats for the Arizona State game will be available at Arizona State. The non-conference games are the Cougars' last two before league play begins.

Elizabeth Bogus is the Sun Devils' major offensive threat, netting seven goals and providing two assists for 16 points. Bogus has help from Manya Makoskio, who has supplied five goals and two assists, and Emily Coehlo, contributing three goals and two assists. Leading the team with three assists is Alissa Oldenkamp. Goalkeeper Kim Bingham has saved the ball 31 times in nine games.

Mallory Miller fronts the Wildcat offensive with six goals on the season. With her ninth game-winning goal in her career on Sunday, fourth this season, Miller holds the program record in that category. Miller has benefited from the nice passing of Nikki David, who leads Arizona with four assists. Goalkeeper Smith McCall has spent 675 minutes in the net and posted 37 saves.

BYU leads the series against Arizona State 2-1, and Arizona 4-1. The Cougars lost both games last season.
