Rendich Beck Named MVP as Soccer Wins Again

Image

MADISON -- The BYU women's soccer team (8-0-0) won it's eighth game in a row on Saturday, defeating Colgate 2-0. BYU was named champions of the Big Toe Invitational by overwhelming the Patriots, as well as No. 14 Wisconsin on Friday.

"We did what we needed to do to win tonight," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "It wasn't one of our best performances, and the win didn't come easy. It was a really hard fought battle."

Four Cougars received individual honors, lead by Most Outstanding Offensive Player Jaime Rendich Beck, who scored the game-winning goal against No. 14 Wisconsin and assisted both goals to defeat Colgate. Jessica Harmon, Katie Larkin and Jessica Aquino were also named to the all-tournament team.

The game was scoreless until Brooke Bowman added a spark for the Cougars in the 29th minute when Rendich Beck saw Bowman open, crossing the ball from the right side of the field. Bowman found it and headed the ball into the top left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

Annie Zwahlen scored the second goal of the game, also off an assist from Rendich Beck, in the 78th minute. The goal marked her first of the season.

BYU dominated the Patriots, recording 18 shots and 9 shots on goal to Colgate's two.

Goal keeper Erika Woodbury had two saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Cougars return to the friendly confines of South Stadium this weekend with games against No. 11 California at Berkley on Friday, and Eastern Washington on Saturday. Game times are slated for 7 p.m.

"We're really proud about the way the girls played this week," Rockwood said. "Winning three games in one week, especially against such great caliber, should be a big confidence booster. We fought hard and found ways to win. We showed perseverance and a positive attitude. And we're really excited about coming home and playing in front of our amazing crowd."

Perfect BYU faces No. 14 Wisconsin in Tourney

Image

PROVO -- After a huge win against No. 22 Texas Monday evening, the BYU women's soccer team (6-0-0) looks to keep the momentum as they head to Wisconsin for the Big Toe Soccer Invitational this weekend. The Cougars challenge No. 14 Wisconsin (4-1-1) on Friday at 6 p.m. (MDT), and on Saturday they face Colgate (3-2-0) at 3:30 p.m. (MDT). The games will be played in Madison, Wisc. The University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee will also be competing in the tournament. Live stats will be available for both games.

In the Badgers' last game, they defeated Washington 2-1, Sunday at the Nike Invitational in Portland, Ore. Juniors Kara Kabellis and Allison Preiss each recorded their first goals of the season for the Badgers in the winning effort.

The Badgers offense is lead by Amy Vermeulen, who has scored four goals for eight points. Allison Preiss has assisted for three goals and scored one for her five points. Lynn Murray has recorded 25 saves in over 550 minutes of action.

This is the first meeting between the two schools.

Colgate University lost to the University of Connecticut Sunday afternoon in the final game of the UConn Classic, when the Huskies defeated the Raiders, 2-0. Franny Iacuzzi and Josie Johnson both made the All-tournament team.

Iacuzzi and Johnson front the Raiders' offensive attack with four goals and three assists apiece. Three other Colgate players have also tallied three assists. Luisa Miller has played almost 300 minutes in goal, saving the ball 13 times in four games.

BYU leads the series 1-0, as the Cougars defeated Colgate 2-0, on Aug. 20, 2003.
