PROVO -- A break-away goal by Santa Clara's Megan Horvath late in the first overtime period propelled the 24th-ranked Broncos over the 8th-ranked BYU women's soccer team 2-1 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday.
BYU got on the board first when just five minutes into the game senior midfielder Sara Reading put a shot into the upper right corner of the goal on an assist from Natalyn Lewis. The two teams battled the rest of the first half but were unable to score any goals. BYU led 1-0 at the half.
"We stayed within our game plan and were able to isolate some of the matchups we wanted," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "Santa Clara is an outstanding and very experienced team."
Santa Clara tied the score at 1-1 just ten minutes into the second half when Chardonnay Poole headed in a cross from teammate Heather Aldama. Neither team was able to score the remainder of the second half, although both teams had opportunities.
"We needed to put the game away when we were pressing their defense late in the second half," Rockwood said. "We had some good looks but couldn't convert them."
"Our goalkeeper made a couple of big saves for us in regulation," Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith said. "I am very proud of the team. We played with a lot of heart and guts against a great team--probably the toughest team we have faced all year."

having various opportunities. Horvath got by the defense and put the ball past the Cougar goalkeeper with just four minutes left in the overtime period.
"This was a tough loss. I felt we deserved to win but things don't always go your way," Rockwood said. "I am so proud of what our team did this year and in this game."
The loss marks the fourth consecutive season the Cougars have lost to Santa Clara at some stage of the NCAA Tournament. With the win, the Broncos advance to the fourth round of the NCAA Tournament where they will face 1st-ranked Notre Dame.
