Seattle, WA (Sept. 21, 2001) Jeni Willardson Viernes scored her first goal of the year in a 1-1 tie against the University of Washington Friday, at this year's Husky/Nike Invitational.

Willardson Viernes' goal came in the 52nd minute of the game when she drew the Huskies goalkeeper Hope Soloout of the box, dribbled around her and scored from 20 yards out.

"I couldn't be more proud of our team," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood."It's just disheartening that we couldn't pull off the win. We came together as a team and I thought Jeni Willardson Viernes played an outstanding game. She was as dangerous as I've ever seen her," added Rockwood.

The University of Washington kept their hopes alive on an unassisted goal by Cassie Giles with just six minutes left in regulation. Their only other scoring opportunities occurred shortly before the first half ended off of two straight corner kicks, but the Cougar defense kept them out of the net. BYU outshot Washington 19 to seven in the 120 minutes of action.

With the first tie of the 2001season, the 17th ranked Cougars record stands at 3-1-1, while the Huskies, ranked 11th nationally, go to 4-0-1 on the year.

In thesecond day of the invitational, it will be BYU against no. 4 Portland, followed by Washington against no. 14 Texas A&M. In Friday's earlier game, Portland defeated Texas A&M 2-1.

Cougar Notes

As the 2001 season progresses, the BYU team has compiled a 3-1-0 record with all three of their wins also being shutouts. She and senior midfielders Sarah Higham Yee and Jennie Christianson will assume key roles along with returning starters Jeni Willardson Viernes, Aurelin Weidner and Jennifer Waldron. The explosive BYU offense will remain intact with Cramer, Yee and Viernes who will be assisted by a highly touted freshman class of scoring threats in Kim Devine, Krissa Campbell and Kimmie Davis.

Rockwood Quotes

(On injuries) We are relatively healthy this week and we're hoping to have Rachelle Dixon back in our lineup after her quad injury. She has not played since the USC game.

(On team) Because we're still a young team, we continue to look at different lineups, and possible player combinations. We want to find the most effective starting lineup and we're still in that process. We've had about a week and half off as most others team have had also due to last week's tragedy so I know that team is anxious to compete again.

(On opponents) We had great games against Washington and Portland last year and look forward to playing them again. Both of these teams are very solid, athletic and strong opponents. They've started out the season playing great soccer and we know they will be a big challenge for us. We need to play our best.
