BYU beats ISU 7-0

PROVO, Utah — No. 18 BYU women’s soccer moved to 5-2-1 on the season after defeating Idaho State 7-0 at South Field Thursday night. It's the Cougars' third consecutive home game scoring seven goals.

"It's fun to score a lot of goals," said BYU forward Mikayla Colohan. "Something's different about South Field, and I think the goals just kind of come for us here. We are peaking at the right moment heading right into conference play. We're ready to hit the ground running."

The Cougars opened scoring early as their first goal came off the foot of senior All-American midfielder Mikayla Colohan with the assist from senior forward Cameron Tucker in the eighth minute of the match. Colohan and Tucker switched roles for the Cougars as Tucker’s shot hit the inside of the post leading to the second goal of the match in the 11th minute.

BYU didn’t slow down as it ran through the Idaho State defense. Sophomore midfielder Bella Folino added another goal to the Cougar stat line in the 12th minute. Sophomore midfielder Brecken Mozingo fired her shot to the back of the net for BYU’s fourth goal of the half in the 15th minute.

The Cougars continued to control the game, keeping the ball in their attacking third, not allowing the Bengals any opportunities. Colohan scored her second goal of the night off a free kick in the 22nd minute.

BYU kept up the pressure on Idaho State with senior forward Makaylie Moore narrowly missing the goal as her header off a corner sailed just above the crossbar. The Cougars led at the half with 20 shots, seven on goal and eight corners to the Bengals zero shots.

The Cougars maintained control starting the second half. Sophomore midfielder Jamie Shepherd sent a laser of a shot on goal as the Bengals keeper McKayla Wetsel saved it from going in.

Junior Ashton Johnson scored goal number six for BYU in the 67th minute of the match after deflecting the ball into the back of the net. It was Johnson's first goal of the season.

"Ashton played a different position tonight, but was very effective and I really like the way she played," said Jennifer Rockwood, BYU head coach. "Something we knew coming in to this match is that we really believed in our depth, our bench and our ability to have girls come into the game and make a difference."

Colohan went down in the box, allowing her to complete her hat trick for the night as the Cougars scored off a penalty in the 74th minute. Colohan’s goal was her 41st career goal, placing her fifth all-time in BYU history.

The Cougars dominated the game holding the Bengals to zero shots the entire match. BYU tallied 32 shots, 10 on goal, with 14 corners. With their seven goals, tonight BYU is averaging 5.2 goals at South Field so far this season.

BYU’s next game will be at home on South Field against Utah State Saturday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. MDT and will be available on the BYU Sports Network -- BYU Radio 107.9 FM/BYU Cougars App and BYUtv.org.
