Boon, Floor Highlight Cougars in Colorado

Image

DENVER -- Alethea Boon picked up the first all-around victory of her career with a 39.100, and the No. 22 Cougar gymnasts tumbled to their second-highest mark of the season on floor to help BYU to a 193.800 outing at a triangular meet Friday in Colorado.

The Cougars came in third place behind No. 17 Denver, who recorded a 196.100, and Pac-10 competitor California at 193.875.

BYU welcomed the return of senior Kacie Capra-Callens to the bars lineup after she sat out last weekend to nurse an ankle injury. The Kingwood, Texas, native swung to a 9.775 to tie freshman teammate McKell Poulson for team-high honors on the event. Kylee Draper was close behind with a 9.750, while Lisa Willis tied a season-best 9.725 for the Cougars. The Pioneers' Courtney Butler took first place on the event with a 9.850.

Hayley Jensen turned in a good night on beam with a career-high 9.775 to lead BYU in its second rotation. Alethea Boon was also strong with a 9.750 to finish right behind Jensen. However, the event that has been one of the Cougars' best the last two years ended up being the one that gave them the most problems Friday night. Three different gymnasts slipped off the apparatus, as BYU counted two falls on the event. DU's Nikki Brown had the highest mark on the event with a 9.925.

A pair of career highs from two freshmen helped the Cougars to a 48.925 on floor to get back on track in the third rotation. First-year competitors Heidi Poulson and Danielle Goldman tumbled to career-best marks of 9.800 and 9.750, respectively, to start things off. Willis followed them with a solid 9.750, and Dayna Smart picked up a 9.800. Boon led the way for the Cougars on the event with a 9.825, the second-best mark of her career.

Boon led BYU on vault with a 9.850 in the last rotation. Smart was just behind with a 9.800. Jenna Kerbis turned in a solid 9.700 for the Cougars.

Boon picked up the highest total score over the four events to come in first place in the all-around. Cal.'s Jessica Kelley was second at 38.975.

The Cougars will be back home for more tri-meet competition when they play host to No. 14 Arizona and in-state rival Southern Utah next Friday in the Marriott Center.

More Tough Triangular Competition for Cougars

Image

PROVO -- Riding the energy of last week's successful triangular meet, the No. 22 BYU women's gymnastics team will look to keep the momentum alive when it travels to Denver, Colo. for a triangular meet with No. 17 Denver and California from the Pac-10.

The Cougars are coming into their last three meets of the season before regional competition the second week in April. They currently hold a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 194.425 and are ranked No. 13 on balance beam.

"We have some great competition coming up," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said. "We want to get out there and hit our routines. This is a fun time of the season."

Last week BYU had its best showing of the year on both vault and bars on its way to a score of 195.125, their second-best mark of the year. Co-captains Alethea Boon and Dayna Smart vaulted to 9.925 and 9.900 scores, respectively. Boon also recorded a 9.800 on bars in her first time competing on the event and notched a 39.225 in the all-around. Kylee Draper, McKell Poulson and Aimee Walker Pond all swung to 9.825s on the event, a career high for both Poulson and Pond. Smart led the way on floor with a career-best 9.875.

DU currently boasts a RQS of 195.450 and is ranked ninth on floor, 17th on beam, 18th on bars and 13th on floor. The Pioneers recorded a season-best 197.000 against Northern Illinois back on Feb. 17. DU is coached by Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart in her ninth season and is led by Heather Huffaker, Casey Dobyns, Jessica Lopez and Sasha Sullivan.

California has a RQS of 192.400 and is ranked No. 33 on floor and No. 34 on vault. The Golden Bears are coming off a season-high 194.575 in a tri-meet victory over Pennsylvania and Air Force. Cal. is coached by Cari Dubois and led by Jessica Kelley, Siobhan Luce and Bridgette Glass.

The Cougars will welcome the return of senior Kacie Capra-Callens, who sat out last week with an ankle injury, back to the bars lineup.

Start time is set for 7 p.m. in Magness Arena. Live stats will be available on the women's gymnastics homepage on www.byucougars.com.
