TUSCON -- After struggling on bars against No. 3 Utah last Friday, the BYU women's gymnastics team recorded a season-high 49.150 on the same event to lift the Cougars to a season-best 194.575 against No. 14 Arizona and No. 2 Florida Friday night in Tuscon.
"We did a good job tonight," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said. "We were a little shaky at times, but overall we did well. We're starting to move in the right direction. The girls are staying positive and working very hard."
BYU came out of the gate a little slow on beam however. Dayna Smart had a very rare fall for the Cougars. Alethea Boon and Kandis Kelly each had good routines though with both posting a 9.775 to lead BYU. The Gators' Corey Hartung took first place on the event at 9.875 while Arizona's Danielle Hicks was second at 9.850.
Kacie Capra tied her season-high 9.825 to lead the Cougars on floor in their second rotation. Smart added a 9.725 for BYU. The Wildcats took the top three spots on the event with Aubrey Taylor first at 9.900.
Brittany Fischer recorded a career-high 9.750 on vault in the Cougars' third rotation. Smart tied with Fischer for tops on the team while Hayley Jensen added a 9.725 for BYU. Arizona's Jami Holton took first place at 9.925.
After a difficult outing on bars their last time out, the Cougars came back with a vengeance on the event in their last rotation. BYU took first place with season-high 49.150. Five Cougars recorded individual season or career highs on the event with Capra leading the way for BYU with a team-best 9.875. Cassie Myers was right behind with a season-high 9.850 while Jennifer Matthews and Kylee Draper each scored a 9.825, a career high for Matthews. Lisa Willis also posted a season-high 9.775.
"Bars was a good event for us tonight," Cattermole said. "It wasn't something they incapable of. They just came out and hit their routines. I was very pleased."
No. 2-ranked Florida took first place overall with a 196.625. The Gators' Hartung (39.425) and Ashley Reed (39.300) took the top two spots in the all-around. The Cougars' Capra was fourth at 38.975, tying her best score of the season.
BYU will be back home next Saturday, March 11, against Boise State. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.

PROVO -- The BYU women's gymnastics team will face another tough test this weekend when it travels to Tuscon to take on No. 14 Arizona and No. 2 Florida at 7:30 p.m. in the McKale Center.
"Those are two very good and extremely talented teams," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said. "Our main concern is sticking our routines though. I'm not concerned about who wins the meet. We just need to score well."
The Cougars are ranked No. 26 in the nation with a Regional Qualifying Score of 193.055 in the latest polls released Feb. 27. Of the four teams in Utah, only No. 3 Utah at 196.160 has a higher RQS.
Against No. 3 Utah on Friday, the Cougars posted season highs on vault (49.000) and beam (49.075) while besting the Utes on beam and floor. Four gymnasts recorded career highs on vault alone, including Brittany Fischer (9.700), Sierra Jacobs (9.850), Hayley Jensen (9.800) and Dayna Smart (9.875). Smart also recorded a season- and team-best 9.900 on beam while Alethea Boon recorded a career-best 9.850.
BYU is ready to have a breakout meet this week especially on bars after struggling and counting falls against Utah last Friday.
"We have got to figure out how to put all four events together," Cattermole said. "Most teams can have a fall and not have to count it. We're not deep enough to do that."
Arizona is coming off an upset win over No. 6 UCLA in which they posted a 195.350. The Wildcats' season high is 195.875 against California. Top performers for Arizona include Aubrey Taylor, Karin Wurm and Danielle Hicks.
No. 2-ranked Florida posted a 195.950 in its last meet against North Carolina State and William and Mary. Its season average is 195.750 and its season high is 196.950. The Gators top performers are Corey Hartung, Ashley Reed, Samantha Lutz and Tiffany Murry.
Start time for the meet will be at 7:30 p.m. MST. A live stats feed will be available on the women's gymnastics homepage at byucougars.com.
