BYU gymnastics finishes with a record-high regionals score of 196.625 at NCAA Regional competition

SEATTLE, Washington - No. 21 BYU finished its NCAA Regional run with the highest regionals score in school history. 

MEET RESULTS

"All the teams did awesome today and we are proud we hung in there with some good teams and had some great gymnastics today," said head coach Guard Young. "I am super proud of how we prepared to compete this year. Last year we were a little flat, and this year we trained harder and longer and I think it showed today. The girls handled the pressure and performed well."

The Cougars began the competition strong on the uneven bars. Lindsey Hunter posted a 9.825 to start the rotation, followed by a 9.850 from Allix Mason and a 9.825 from Anyssa Alvarado. Fifth-year senior Haley Pitou rounded out the rotation and the Cougars finished with a team score of 49.075. BYU went into the second round in fourth place behind Michigan (49.200), Washington (49.275), and Alabama (49.500). 

BYU started the second rotation with solid performances on the balance beam. Both Lauren Ono and Mason posted scores of 9.875 to tie their individual career highs to get the rotation underway. Beam specialist Sophia McClelland also posted a 9.875 after a stuck landing and beautiful routine. Miner-Van Tassell notched a 9.825, followed by Elease Rollins and Mina Margraf posting individual scores of 9.800. With all six gymnasts scoring above a 9.800 in the second rotation, BYU finished in fourth with a team score of 49.250.

The Cougars showed off their personalities during their floor routines in the third rotation. Senior Abby Beeston began the rotation with a solid 9.825 performance, followed by Sophie Dudley’s 9.800 to tie her career high on the event. Addy Rieder showcased her consistency on floor with a 9.850. Miner-Van Tassell notched a 9.875, followed by senior floor specialist Brittney Vitkauskas who ended the rotation with a 9.875 as well. The Cougars went into the final rotation in fourth place with a team score of 147.550.

BYU’s final rotation of the night was the vault. Pitou started off with a 9.800 for the Cougars, followed by another 9.800 by Mason. Senior Lexi Griffith notched a new career-high score of 9.900 on the apparatus. In her first time competing on vault this season, Alvarado finished the rotation with a 9.800 for the Cougars. BYU ended the competition in fourth place with a final score of 196.625. The Cougars came in fourth behind UW’s 197.175, MSU’s 197.325 and Alabama’s 197.900. 

No. 5 Alabama and No. 12 Michigan State finished in the top two places and advanced to the final round of regionals to be held on Saturday afternoon.

No. 21 prepares for NCAA Regional Competition

PROVO, Utah – No. 21 BYU prepares to battle in the 2022 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships regionals on Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, Washington, at 1 p.m. PDT. 

The Seattle Regional will host nine teams for the NCAA competition. The Cougars will compete against host No. 25 UW, No. 5 Alabama and No. 12 Michigan State on Thursday. No. 29 Stanford and No. 34 San Jose State will compete on Wednesday, March 30 at 3 p.m. PDT to determine which team will advance to the second round on Thursday. The other schools competing in Seattle will be starting their tournament run on Thursday for an evening meet at 7 p.m. PDT. These teams include No. 4 Utah, No. 13 Oregon State and No. 19 Illinois.

THE COUGARS. BYU finished its regular season ranked No. 21 in the nation after a successful season. The Cougars ended the season with the MRGC Championships, where they placed No. 4 with a final score of 196.375. Senior Sadie Miner-Van Tassell finished the competition with a new career-high score of 9.950 on the vault. Eight Cougars received all-conference honors including Guard Young being named Coach of the Year and Miner-Van Tassell receiving the title of Gymnast of the Year. Along with these conference honors, Miner-Van Tassell was awarded WCGA Regular Season All-Around All America honors and Elease Rollins was awarded WCGA Regular Season Beam All-America honors.

THE HUSKIES. UW finished its season ranked No. 25 in the nation and finished the Pac-12 Gymnastics Championship in sixth place. The Huskies finished the championship meet with a final score of 196.400 after a strong performance on the balance beam where each gymnast posted scores of 9.800 or higher.

THE TIDE. Alabama finished the season ranked No. 5 in the nation and took second place at the SEC Championships with a final score of 197.825. The Tide finished closely behind No. 2 Florida, who posted a 198.200 at the championship. Along with its strong performance at the SEC Championships, the Alabama gymnastics team had four gymnasts earn WCGA Regular Season All-America honors.

THE SPARTANS. Michigan State finished the season ranked No. 12 nationally and took second place at the Big Ten Championships with a final score of 197.050. This second-place finish was the Spartan's best performance in the Big Ten Championships since they hosted the meet back in 2006 and finished with a score of 194.975. MSU’s vault (49.250) and bars (49.300) scores were also program-best championship highs.   

The top four teams will advance to the third round of the tournament on Saturday, April 2 at 5 p.m. PDT. The top two teams from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, the top all-around competitor and top event specialist from round two at each regional (who is not on a team advancing to nationals) will advance to the national championships. Event specialist qualifiers will only compete in the events they qualify for.
