TEMPE, Ariz., (March 13, 2010) – Back-to-back losses Saturday to Pacific, 2-4, and No. 10 Arizona St., 6-11, sent the Cougars home to Provo with a 1-3 record at the Diamond Devil’s Invitational.

The Cougars’ (16-7) first game against Pacific started out quiet offensively as both teams went three up, three down for the first two innings.

In the bottom of the third, the Tigers scored four runs after a double with bases loaded, and a BYU throwing error.

At the top of the fifth, Jessica Fitu started the inning with a lead-off single to right field. Immediately following, Andrea Ramirez stepped up and hit a two-run shot giving the Cougars their only two runs of the game.

Ramirez currently leads the team in homers with nine on the season. She has a total of 25 career home runs which places her in third place of current players behind Fitu, with 32, and Angie Quiocho who leads with 44 career home runs.

BYU threatened again with bases loaded in the seventh, but was unable to score.

Fitu was near perfect from the plate going 2-for-3 with a single and a double with one run scored. Freshman Alexandra Hudson got on-base on both at-bats as she collected her sixth double of the season and walked.

In the second game of their doubleheader, the Cougars faced No. 10 ASU for the second time in two days.

Kristin Delahoussaye got BYU on the board early with a lead-off homerun in the first to give the team an early 1-0 lead.

The Sun Devils were quick to answer as they scored four runs in the top of the second thanks to a grand slam hit by Caylyn Carlson.

Down by only three, BYU went to work at its next at-bat in the bottom of the second.

Amanda Kellum started with a single to right field followed by Hudson singling to right-center, advancing Kellum to third. Amber Price was next up, and she reached first on a fielding error which scored Kellum.

After Caschjen Atagi walked, loading the bases, Delahoussaye singled to center field bringing Hudson home to score.

Later in the inning, with one out and runners on first and third, Quiocho reached first on a fielder’s choice which allowed Atagi, who was on third, to tied the game.

BYU scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth but was not able to catch up with No. 10 A-State, as it scored three runs in the third and four in the sixth.

Offensively, BYU was led by Delahoussaye with a pair of hits, including a one-run home run and a single, two RBI and one run. Quiocho also picked up two RBI.

The Cougars’ will head home, then take a well-deserved one-week rest as their next tournament is not until March 26, in Palo Alto, Calif.

BYU has played its first 23 games on the road and has four more road games to play until its home opener against Utah State on March 31 at Gail Miller Field.

PROVO -- With two ranked victories under its belt, BYU (15-4) heads to Tempe, Arizona to face its fifth ranked team, and host, No. 10 Arizona State.

BYU’s Tournament begins on Friday, with a doubleheader against Nebraska at 2:30 p.m. and No. 10 Arizona St. at 5 p.m. BYU returns to the field the next day to face Pacific at 10 a.m. and No. 10 Arizona St. at 3 p.m.

BYU enters this tournament ranked as well, as it has climbed back into to the polls reaching No. 23 in the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Top 25 Poll. The team also placed rankings in the Ultimate College Softball Coaches Poll at No. 22.

Although this is the second time this season the Cougars have found themselves in a ranked position, BYU head coach Gordon Eakin remains focused on the end result.

“These rankings reflect how hard we are working this season, and we are honored to be ranked among the best teams in the nation,” Eakin said. “However, what we are focused on most as a team is making it past regionals into super regionals and beyond. We don't want to put too much emphasis on our current rankings. Instead we want to keep our eyes focused on our end goal of going further than ever before."

The Cougars have five-straight appearances to post-season NCAA Regionals, but have yet to make it to Super Regionals or beyond and are working to make this their first year to do so.
