TEMPE -- The BYU Women's softball swept its opening games of the Wilson/Demarini Invitational in Tempe Ariz., defeating Drake, 2-1, and Creighton, 1-0. The Cougars are now 11-5 on the season.

Both games featured solid pitching performances from BYU. Christina Gwyn Trice (4-1) threw a five-hit shut out against Creighton. She recorded 10 strike outs in the hard-fought defensive battle.

Chrisite Zinanti (3-3) received the first win of the day when the right-hander threw a complete game against Drake. She commanded the strike zone with 11 strike outs, a season-game high, and gave up one unearned run off of four hits.

"It is nice to have the ability to win the close games," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "Both pitchers did a good job today and our defense was strong. That is what it takes to continue winning on this level."

Against Creighton, the score remained at a dead lock until the top of the sixth inning when Angeline Quiocho belted a solo shot to score the Cougars' lone run. Quiocho leads BYU with nine homeruns.

Against Drake the Cougars struck earlier in the game, scoring both runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs Kristin Delahoussaye shot the ball down the right field line for a triple. Stephanie Platt Hopkins walked to put runners on the corners and Caschjen Davis doubled to bring in both runners.

BYU gave up one run in the top of the fifth inning when a walk and an error put a Drake baserunner in scoring position and a singled knocked in the run. The Cougars ended the inning and managed to hold their 2-1 lead during the remainder of the game.

BYU plays two more games Saturday at the Wilson Demarini Invitational. The Cougars face Creighton again at 3:30 p.m. and No. 2 Arizona State at 5:30 p.m.
