ST. GEORGE -- The BYU (5-0) women's softball team kept its winning streak alive at the Red Desert Classic, beating in-state rival Utah Valley State College (1-2) 9-0 and Loyola Marymount (3-2) 7-3. Freshman Christie Zinanti picked up her second win of the season behind four shut-out innings against UVSC, while the Cougars improve to 5-0 overall on the season.

"They came out strong and never stopped today," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "I'm very pleased with the way they played. Zinanti's got great potential. She threw today with a big blister on her toe and battled through it and played well."

With Tracee Hoch on base, Jodi Norton smacked her second home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning against UVSC giving the Cougars a 2-0 advantage. Emi Snow was the next batter, and she singled past the third baseman, setting the stage for Dani Urincho's two-run dinger. Right-fielder Heidi Boyer initially had the ball but couldn't hold on, as it bounced off her glove and behind the wall.

The Wolverines threatened in the second inning with two on and no outs, but Zinanti got herself out of the jam by retiring three of the next four batters.

Urincho jacked another two-run homer over left field on the first pitch she saw in the third inning to keep BYU in front 6-0. Norton, who had walked two batters earlier, crossed home for the second time to that point thanks to Urincho's hit.

"It felt great because I struggled at the plate yesterday, so I just went up today to try to do my best," Urincho said after the game. "Plus my mom came, so I wanted to do really well for her."

The Cougars kept the runs coming in the fourth. With Jennifer Whiteley and Monica Gonzales in scoring position, senior Tracee Hoch went yard for the second time this weekend. The 9-0 score held until the fifth inning when the game was called.

BYU built a 3-1 lead in the second inning against LMU behind Hoch"s base-clearing double. A Norton two-run blast, her third home run of the tournament, and a Whiteley score off of a walk made it 6-1 in the fifth inning.

The Lions eventually notched two more on the scoreboard, but not before a Stephanie Platt double drove in Urincho for the Cougars' final run of the game.

BYU travels to Las Vegas for the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, which runs from Feb. 15 to Feb. 17. The Cougars face Missippi State on Thurs. at 5 p.m. Fans can experience the action via the live stats link.
