LAS -- In a win or go home situation, BYU prevailed against Colorado State, 3-1, and San Diego State, 8-4, at the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas.

Summer Tobias pitched another pair of tough games for the Cougars (42-19, 16-6 MWC), giving up only one unearned run in the victory. Tobias has now thrown 21 innings and picked up two victories in the tournament.

After leaving a runner on base in each of the first three innings, BYU got its best opportunity in the fourth inning when Andrea Ramirez led the inning off with a double. Ianeta Le`i drew an intentional walk to put two runners on with nobody out. Paige Paramore delivered the Cougars' first run of the tournament with an RBI single to left.

Three batters and one hit later, BYU's Tracee Hoch delivered a huge bases-loaded, two-out single to right field that scored Le`i and Paramore and gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

Colorado State answered in the next half-inning when Lauren Cusick picked up an RBI single to right field with two outs in the inning. The run was unearned as Jessi Strickland reached on a fielding error to set up the run.

After that, it was all Tobias as she pitched the Cougars to the victory.

BYU started its second game of the day on fire in the Las Vegas heat. Ramirez and Monica Gonzales led the game off with back-to-back singles and each scored on a two-run single by Le`i. The two RBI pushed Le`i's school-record and nation-leading total to 81 this season.

San Diego State came back with runs of its own in the bottom of the second. Chrissie Markham delivered an RBI single to cut the Cougars' lead to 2-1.

BYU came roaring back in the fourth frame. After Paramore led the inning off with a single, Jodi Norton blasted an opposite field homer, her 15th of the season. Cortney Nix picked up a single of her own and scored on an RBI single by Emi Snow. Snow and Ramirez scored when Le`i singled to left field and advanced to third when the ball got past the left fielder.

With the Cougars up 7-1, SDSU added a run in the bottom of the fourth on another RBI single by Markham.

The Aztecs began to make things interesting in the bottom of the fifth when Taryin Casillas came up with a two-run single to cut the BYU lead to 7-4. But BYU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and Tobias retired the side in order in the bottom to get the win.

The same two teams will face off at 2:30 p.m. (PDT) Saturday to play for a chance to take on Utah for the MWC title. The title game will be a 5:30 start.

LAS -- As a number two seed, BYU will seek to win its second consecutive Mountain West Conference tournament when play starts Thursday evening.

The Cougars (40-18, 15-5) finished second in the MWC regular season, a game behind league champion and number one seeded San Diego State. The Cougars swept a doubleheader from the Aztecs last Thursday, knocking SDSU out of the top-25.

BYU will face off against the winner of the New Mexico/Utah game played at 11:30 (PDT) Thursday morning. Utah is a third seed with New Mexico as the six seed.

Overall, the Cougars have won seven of their last eight MWC games with the only loss coming at the hands of Colorado State.

At stake for BYU is a possible berth to the NCAA Regionals set to begin next week.
