PROVO -- Homeruns were plentiful for BYU and Southern Utah as the two teams used eight blasts between the two to split a doubleheader 5-10 and 10-1 Tuesday at Miller Park. The Cougars are now 24-14 on the season.

SUU came from behind to take game one, defeating the Cougars 10-5, with seven runs coming in the sixth inning when the Thunderbirds hit four homeruns off Brooke Boyce-Humbert. SUU had nine hits compared to BYU's seven and had just one error to three for the Cougars.

Corie Jensen (6-7) went the distance on the mound for the Thunderbirds and earned the win. Boyce-Humbert was credited with the loss for BYU. Marci Pratt went 3-4 with one homerun and two RBI to lead Southern Utah and Rodeo Carli added one three-run homer. Le'i led the Cougars with two RBI on 2-4 hitting.

Southern Utah struck first in game one, scoring two unearned runs in the first inning on a single by Amy Sauer. With one out, the Thunderbirds then loaded the bases when Cassie Cresswell reached on an error and the next two batters singled. Neiderhouser then grounded to Urincho who threw to Nix for the out at home. Sauer was the next batter and she knocked a single to right field to score the two runs.

BYU came alive in the second, scoring four runs on four hits, two walks and an error. With runners on first and second, Jodi Norton cleared the bases by sending one deep to right field for a triple. She was sent home by the next batter, Nix, who had a single that hit the left field line. After two walks and a fly out by Andrea Ramirez, Lei hit an infield single that score Nix.

Southern Utah struck back in the third, scoring an unearned run off a hit by Pratt. Cresswell led off the inning with a single and then stole second. Pratt then singled to left center and Whiteley fumbled the ball, giving Cresswell time to reach home from third.

Both teams went without scoring in the fourth and fifth but Southern Utah caught fire in the sixth, scoring seven runs on four homeruns hit to the same spot in left field. The first was a three-run shot by Rodeo Carli off Boyce-Humbert, who replaced Daniella Urincho at the top of the fourth. After a ground out and a walk, the Thunderbirds hit back-to-back-to-back homers, including Pratt's three-run shot and solo dingers by Hall and Niederhouser.

Le'i led off the seventh with a homer to center but Jensen retired three of the next four batters to end the inning and the game.

Boyce-Humber came back strong in the second game, going the distance while giving up only one run on three hits to silence SUU's hot bats.

"Brooke (Boyce-Humbert) gave us a great effort today," BYU coach Gordon Eakin said. "She came out and competed well. She came back in the second game and gave us a great effort."

The Thunderbirds started off game two in much the same fashion they ended game one. Bobbi Jo Merrill took a Boyce-Humbert offering over the center field wall to give the Thunderbirds the first run of the game. SUU finished the inning with two hits before the Cougars got out of the inning.

Monica Gonzales started BYU off in the bottom half of the inning with a single to left. She came around to score when Krystle Chamberlain reached second on two SUU errors. Le'i followed with a double to center field to score Chamberlain. Le'i came in two batters later off a sacrifice fly from Ashlyn Russell. The Cougars finished with three runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead after the first inning.

SUU drew a walk with one out in the top half of the next inning but it was erased when Jensen hit into a 3-6-4 double play. The Thunderbirds never threatened from there.

Jennifer Whiteley and Jodi Norton both reached base on consecutive walks in the Cougars half of the second before advancing on Tracee Hoch's sacrifice bunt. Whiteley was later thrown out at home plate off a Gonzales sacrifice. Gonzales then stole second and Chamberlain reached on an infield single. She then stole second to put runners at second and third with two out. They were left stranded though when Le'i lined out to end the inning. BYU led 4-1 after the second.

Both teams went scoreless in the third before BYU exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hoch started things off with a single and later moved to third on a Thunderbird error. She came into score from a pick-off attempt that sailed past SUU's third baseman. Chamberlain then singled to center to plate Gonzales before going to third on another errant throw while stealing second base. Le'i then cranked her second homerun of the day to give the Cougars their fourth run of the inning. Emi Snow continued the BYU hit parade with a double to left center that just missed going over the fence. Russell followed with a blast over the center field wall to give the Cougars a 10-1 lead before SUU ended the fourth.

BYU held the Thunderbirds scoreless in the fifth to take the win. Boyce-Humber bounced back strong after after her first game struggles, scattering just three hits and one run, to pick up the victory. She improved to 6-2 on the season. Merrill (1-8) took the loss for SUU.

The Cougars will resume conference play Thursday April 13, when they hit the road for a doubleheader at New Mexico. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m. respectively.

PROVO -- A Tuesday doubleheader against Southern Utah will end BYU's 10-game homestand as the Cougars will play six games this week.

After BYU (23-13, 4-2 MWC) plays host to the Thunderbirds it will return to the road and to Mountain West Conference play when the Cougars travel to New Mexico and Colorado State for a pair of weekend doubleheaders.

The Cougars are currently second place in the MWC with their 4-2 conference record. San Diego State remains atop the league with a perfect 6-0 record.

Game times for Tuesdays' games at Gail Miller Field are 3 and 5 p.m. BYU's games with New Mexico will start at 1 p.m. on Thursday and have a noon start against Colorado State Saturday.
