PROVO, Utah – McKenna Bull and Alexa Strid helped BYU to win its 11-straight home opener and claim both ends of a doubleheader against visiting Oklahoma State Friday.

"Both teams played great in the first game, and our bats just happened to catch fire in the second," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "That second game was just a total team effort, offensively, defensively and in the circle."

Bull led BYU to a 2-1 victory and her NCAA-leading 18th win in the first game for the Cougars, and freshman Strid hit her first collegiate home run in the nightcap as the Cougars downed the Cowgirls 10-2.

Game One

BYU (19-7) used timely defense and hitting, and a gem from its ace to edge out Oklahoma State (16-15) in the first game.

Bull struck out seven and allowed three hits en route to the win. Catcher Sydney Broderick threw out a runner stealing and recorded two hits, including the eventual game-winner.

After allowing a run in the top of the first, Bull held the Cowgirls scoreless the rest of the way, giving up only two hits over the last six frames.

Strong defense helped Bull's cause. With two outs in the top of the third, BYU left fielder Mercedes O'Connor sprinted toward the fence and made a tumbling catch over her shoulder to strand a runner. In the fifth, BYU center fielder Gordy Bravo made a diving catch in the right-center gap for the second out of the inning. An Oklahoma State runner appeared to tag up and score all the way from second, but Eakin appealed and the umpire determined the runner left early, giving the Cougar defense the third out of the inning.

BYU's bats struck in the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, Ashley Thompson roped a double down the right-field line to drive in Lauren Bell, who reached on a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by O'Connor.

With the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Broderick one-hopped a double to the fence in right center to score O'Connor from first.

Bull (18-4) put the Cowgirls down in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the 2-1 win.

Game Two

A couple of big innings paced BYU to a win in the second game, as Thompson kept the Oklahoma State bats in check.

The Cougars batted around in the bottom of the second, using four hits, a walk and three Oklahoma State errors to score five runs and lead 5-0. Bravo, Bell, Thompson and Broderick all batted in runs in the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, St. Clair rocketed a double off the center-field fence to drive in a run and Coco Tauli'i singled in two more to increase BYU's lead to 8-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Strid's solo shot and an RBI-single from O'Connor put the game in the books for the Cougars, as they won 10-2 in five innings.

Thompson (1-1) gave up five hits in five innings, allowed one earned run and struck out four in a winning effort.

PROVO, Utah – BYU softball prepares to open at home with a series against Oklahoma State this weekend.

The Cougars (17-7) will play the Cowgirls (12-13) in a three-game series starting with a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m. MDT and 6 p.m. and concluding with a 1 p.m. start time Saturday. BYU will then face UVU in Saturday contest at 3:30 p.m. All the games will be televised on BYUtv and broadcast on satellite radio via BYU Radio.

Last weekend, the Cougars went 4-1 at the San Diego Classic II, helping to notch the 500th win under head coach Gordon Eakin. 

Pitcher McKenna Bull leads the NCAA in wins with a 17-4 record while being ranked No. 18 in strikeouts with 121. Her 1.70 ERA has helped pace the BYU defense as she helped hold opponents to one run in four of the last five games.

Gordy Bravo and Lacey Hofstedt have continued their hot hitting, batting .450 and .437, respectively. Bravo has an eight-game hitting and a 25-game reached base streak. Hofstedt has recorded a hit in each of the last six games.

Other standouts from the plate include McKenzie St. Clair with her .339 average and Sydney Broderick with her .314.

BYU’s 17-7 mark so far this season is the best win percentage heading into the first home game since its 23-8 record in 2010. 

Oklahoma State

The Cowgirls are led by Shelby Davis from the plate with her .465 average to go along with 13 RBI and 26 stolen bases. Tiffany Mikkelson also stands out with a .395 average while hitting seven home runs for 28 RBI on the year. The pitching duties have been split by Brandi Needham (6-4, 4.97 ERA) and Meagan Lively (3-5, 4.29 ERA). 

Oklahoma State is on a three-game win streak after sweeping Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Prior to the series in Provo, it will play two games at home against Iowa and Central Arkansas before playing two against UVU in Orem. The Cougars are 3-5 all-time against the Cowgirls.

UVU

The Wolverines are led by Brianna Gatlin (.390 BA, 5 HR, 13 RBI) and Jaylen Watson (.324 BA, 4 HR, 10 RBI) from the plate. Bailey Moore has seen the bulk of the innings from the circle with a 7-9 record and 4.08 ERA in 104.2 innings pitched.

BYU has an all-time record of 30-3 against UVU with a 15-0 mark at home.
