Record-Setting Night for #4 BYU in Victory

HONOLULU, Hawaii - In five sets (25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 36-34, 15-12) the No. 4 BYU men's volleyball team defeated No. 11 Hawaii on the road, Friday.

Sophomore Taylor Sander tied the record for total attempts in a single match, in the rally-scoring era, with 58 on the night. Sander finished the match also adding 23 kills, nine digs and five blocks to lead his team. 

Senior Futi Tavana set a new record in the match for total blocks in a single match, in the rally-scoring era, with 14 to lead all players. The previous record was held by himself, set his freshman year. Tavana also contributed 14 kills. 

Four Cougars recorded double-digit kills against the Warriors for the first time this season to have more than one player in a match with 10+. Robb Stowell contributed 16 to lead all players while Joe Kauliakamoa, Josue Rivera and Jaylen Reyes added 15, 11 and 11, respectively. Stowell also added 10 kills while Rivera had 13.

The Cougars took sets one and two in the same score, 25-23, for an early lead in the match before the Warriors took set three also in the same score. 

With the match on the line, the Warriors took the fourth set 36-34 to send it to five. The Cougars held a 24-21 lead before three-straight Hawaii points tied the score at 24 and sent the set into a back-and-forth scoring attack that eventually went in favor of Hawaii. 

In set five, BYU took an early 3-0 lead before Hawaii answered with three points of its own. The set tied against at 5, 10 and 11 before the Cougars took the lead and match final with a 15-12 score. 

Hawaii and BYU will meet again tomorrow at 7 p.m. HST/11 p.m. MT in the same arena. Check the BYU men's schedule page for updates on how to follow the match.

Cougars Hit The Road, Head To Hawaii

After eight-straight matches at home, the No. 4 BYU men's volleyball team hits the road this weekend with a pair of matches against No. 11 Hawaii on Friday & Saturday, March 16 & 17. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m. HST/11 p.m. MT.

BYU is riding a 15-4 overall record after winning last weekend’s matches against Pacific at home. Senior Robb Stowell leads the Cougar offense on 244 kills with 4 other players recording 100+ kills and 7 more players recording double-digit kills. Taylor Sander, Josue Rivera and Russ Lavaja have totaled 202, 187 and 118 kills, respectively.  Joe Kauliakamoa leads the squad with 681 assists.

Lavaja leads the team with 109 blocks and is third in the BYU rally scoring era for total blocks. 

After last weekend, Tavana became the all-time blocks leader & block assist leader in BYU’s rally scoring era and is just nine away from becoming the solo blocks leader.

The Cougars are averaging 3.2 blocks per set compared to their opponents’ 1.7 b/s.

Hawaii holds a 7-12 overal and 4-10 league record this season with its most recent win coming over then-No. 3 Stanford on the road. The win moved them from a 14-seed to their current No. 11 ranking. Steve Hunt leads the Warriors with 294 season kills, averaging 4.14 per set. JP Marks leads the team with 15 aces and Nick West’s 69 total blocks (.97 per set) is the most for their roster.
