LAS VEGAS -- In a round robin tournament in Las Vegas, the BYU men's volleyball team won the tournament with a 5-0 record. The team defeated Cal Baptist, Long Beach State, Grand Canyon University, Lewis and UC San Diego.
"Our effort was great in spurts and now we will work to sustain that for entire matches," BYU interim head coach Rob Neilson said. "We got great contributions from everyone and have some real positives to build upon. This is a very fun group to watch as they are talented, they work together and are passionate about the game. Our fans will love to follow this team."
The teams played three games to 25 throughout the tournament, the Cougars always coming out on top.
Feature matches included Cal Baptist (25-15, 24-26, 25-12) and Long Beach State (21-25, 25-19, 25-10).
The Cougars will now rest until the Santa Barbara tournament January 7-8 as the last matches played before the regular season.
PROVO -- Continuing with pre-season play, the BYU men’s volleyball team will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. Friday and Saturday to take on five teams in a round robin tournament at Las Vegas High School.
BYU, the host school, will welcome Cal Baptist, Grand Canyon University, Lewis, Long Beach State and UC San Diego. The teams will play three games to 25 throughout the tournament.
Friday BYU and Lewis will open tournament play at 1:30 p.m. on court one while Cal Baptist and Grand Canyon will play on court two. At 3 p.m. UC San Diego and Grand Canyon will be the matchup on court one while LBSU and Lewis are on court two. At 4:30 p.m. LBSU and Cal Baptist will play on court one while BYU and UCSD will take court two.
At 6 p.m. Grand Canyon will take on Lewis on court one, followed by BYU and CBU on court one at 7:30 p.m. LBSU and UCSD will face off on court two as well at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday at 3 p.m. CBU and UCSD will face off on court one while the Cougars and GCU will take court two. UCSD and Lewis will take court one at 4:30 p.m. while LBSU and GCU will play on court two.
At 6 p.m. on Saturday LBSU and BYU will take court one while Lewis and CBU will play on court two in the final two matches of the tournament.
