PROVO -- For the second night in a row, BYU's Jonathan Alleman recorded a match-high 30 kills to lead the Cougars to a close 30-22, 23-30, 30-28, 28-30, 21-19 win over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foe Stanford at Burnham Pavilion. The No. 5 Cougars are 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF, while the No. 12 Cardinal is 2-4 and 0-2.

"Tonight we played a very close match--even closer than last night," BYU head coach Tom Peterson said. "It was very emotional, but it's a great feeling to start off with two wins."

Similar to last night, BYU and Stanford battled it out through five games, but the Cougars were able to outlast the Cardinal in game five, winning 21-19. The Cougars, who out-blocked the Cardinal 12.0-9.5, won it on a final block by sophomore middle blocker Michael Burke, who contributed eight blocks during the match and 12 kills (.409). Junior middle blocker Chris Gorny added 12 kills (.333) and three digs and Jaime Mayol hit a team-leading .556 percentage with 11 kills on the night.

Four of Stanford's players recorded double-digit kills, including senior Curt Toppel, who led the team with 25 kills (.321) and 13 digs. Senior William Strickland added 14 kills and senior Paul Bocage chipped in 11 kills.

The Cougars out-hit the Cardinal .600 (14-2-20) to .100 (10-7-30) in game one to take the initial lead. Midway through game two Stanford used a 7-3 run to take a 21-16 lead and even the score.

Stanford led 25-23 in game three, but the Cougars reeled off five of the next six points to take a 28-26 lead. Stanford came back to tie it at 28, but back-to-back kills from Alleman gave BYU a 30-28 win. In game four, the Cardinal gained a 28-21 lead, but the Cougars came back with a 7-1 run to put it at 29-28. Toppel made the game-winning kill for the Cardinal to even the score at 2-2 and take the match into the fifth game.

The Cougars return to action on Monday at No. 15 University of the Pacific, where they will play two matches in two days. Monday's and Tuesday's matches both start at 7 p.m. (PST) at the Spanos Center in Stockton.

PROVO -- The fifth-ranked BYU men's volleyball team will travel to California this week to play back-to-back matches against conference foes Stanford and University of the Pacific in five days. The Cougars face the Cardinal Friday and Saturday, January 17-18, then travel to Stockton to play the Tigers Monday and Tuesday, January 20-21.

"We're going to have to play our best, and for a long time with four matches in five days," BYU head coach Tom Peterson said. "But if we do play well, it is a huge opportunity for us to get a step-up on the other teams in the conference."

Friday night's match at No. 12 Stanford (2-2) marks the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season for the Cougars (0-0), who split exhibition matches last week with Red Deer College. BYU leads the overall series record with Stanford 12-8, with a 5-6 record at Stanford. The matches Friday and Saturday will begin at 7 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion.

BYU also leads the series with No. 15 Pacific (1-3) 10-2 overall and 3-2 in Stockton.

"Pacific has perhaps the best team they've ever had," Peterson said. "Two years ago they were one of the only teams to beat BYU when BYU won the national championship." The matches Monday and Tuesday will begin at 7 p.m. at the Spanos Center in Stockton.
