No. 48 BYU beats Air Force at home

PROVO, Utah – The No. 48 BYU men’s tennis team topped the Air Force Falcons 6-1 on Saturday night at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.

“I’m proud of our win but maybe more so of how our guys have overcome adversity in the form of a tough schedule,” head coach Brad Pearce said. “We have been on both the east and west coasts playing matches and haven’t had a chance to play at high altitude for two weeks.”

BYU (6-2) improves its overall record to 27-3 against Air Force (3-3).

The Cougars, who are now 3-0 at home, started off strong as all three doubles teams captured wins.

The duo of Patrick Kawka and Francis Sargeant, as well as Keaton Cullimore and John Pearce, improve to 6-1 on the season after their wins against the Falcons.

Two of BYU’s singles victories were decided in straight sets. Sargeant beat Steven Young on court 3, 6-1, 6-2 while freshman Andrey Goryachkov finished out his match quickly 6-1, 6-1 on court 6.

Playing on court 4, Cullimore put up the fourth deciding point on the board as he defeated Alex Grubbs 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.

BYU remains at home next Saturday to host conference foe Santa Clara at noon MST at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.

Cougars travel to Calif. then host Air Force

PROVO, Utah – After competing at the ITA Kick-off Weekend last weekend in Los Angeles, the No. 48 BYU men’s tennis team travels back to California to face the No. 18 Stanford Cardinal. The Cougars then return home to host Air Force on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., at the Indoor Tennis Courts.

Friday’s match against Stanford will be the fourth consecutive ranked opponent BYU has played. The Cougars are 3-1 this year against ranked teams.

The Cardinal (2-1) were ranked No. 10 last week before falling to No. 26 Texas A&M on Friday. They improved their record with a victory over No. 29 Texas Tech on Saturday.

Stanford boasts a top ranked singles player in No. 39 John Morrissey, as well as the No. 57 doubles team of Jamin Ball and Trey Strobel.

On Friday, Air Force (3-1) will play against Utah before coming down to Provo to face BYU. This year the Falcons have wins over Seattle, Montana and Montana State.

The Cougars have the edge all-time against Air Force at 26-3.

The home match at the Indoor Tennis Courts is free to attend and pizza will be provided.
