SAN -- In the final dual match of a week long California road trip, the BYU men's tennis team defeated the University of San Diego 4-3 Friday.

For the second day in a row, winning the doubles point seals the victory for the Cougars, who finish the four-match trip with a 3-1 record.

The Cougars split the six singles matches with the Toreros, 3-3, but took two of three in doubles play to pick up the one doubles point and give BYU the win.

The doubles team of senior Damien Ward and sophomore Gert Vilms won in number one doubles. Ward and Vilms, ranked 26th in the nation, defeated the team of German Maldonado and Ricardo Rizo 8-6. BYU's Nic Losee and Carlos Lozano, the 16th-ranked doubles team in the country, won in number two doubles, defeating Mattias Tangefjord and Ray van Wasbeek 8-4.

In singles play, Vilms defeated Sean Cooper 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 in number two singles, Nic Losee defeated van Wasbeek 6-3, 6-4 in number three play and David White won the number five match 7-5, 6-2 against Ted Burghardt.

The Cougars first home match of the season will be Feb. 11 against Air Force.
