BYU vs. UCLA box score

LOS ANGELES—Despite strong singles efforts from Aidan Carrazedo and Shane Monroe, the BYU men’s tennis team lost 7-0 to the No. 6-ranked UCLA Bruins Thursday.

"UCLA is one of the best teams in the country," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "It's always a difficult transition to go from Provo to Los Angeles, but overall, I was pleased with our performance. We competed well and had the right mindset, especially in our doubles play. Some matches were closer than others, but I thought all of our players went out with a great mentality today."

BYU (11-3, 2-0 WCC) dropped the doubles point for only the fourth time this year. In the No. 1 doubles spot, juniors Carrazedo and Jeremy Bourgeois lost to UCLA’s Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell 3-6. Shortly after, the Cougar duo of Keaton Cullimore and Andrey Goryachkov lost to the Bruin’s No. 3 doubles team of Gage Brymer and Austin Rapp 3-6. John Pearce and Jacob Sullivan were leading UCLA’s Maxime Cressy and Martin Redlicki 6-5 before their match was called, as the Bruins had already claimed the doubles point.

UCLA (11-2, 0-0 Pac-12) took its momentum from doubles play into singles play. In the No. 4 singles spot, Logan Stagges defeated Pearce, 6-1, 6-2, to claim the second point of the match for the Bruins and Di Giulio defeated Bourgeois, 6-1, 6-3, for the third point. No. 93 Sell defeated Goryachkov 6-2, 6-4 to secure the victory for the Bruins.

Redlicki, who is ranked No. 57 nationally, defeated Monroe, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) and Cullimore lost to No. 72 Brymer, 5-7, 6-2. Carrazedo won the first set against Ryoto Tachi, but lost the match in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 3-6.

BYU will return home for two matches next weekend. The Cougars will face LMU in a WCC matchup Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m. MST and UNLV Saturday, March 19 at 12 p.m. MST. Admission is free.

PROVO, Utah—Coming off a loss to No. 70 New Mexico, the BYU men’s tennis team looks to rebound this week against No. 6 UCLA.

The Cougars (11-2, 2-0 WCC) head to Los Angeles on Thursday, March 10, to face the Bruins (10-2, 0-0 Pac-12). The match begins at 2:30 p.m. PST

“Going back to Westwood is always a treat for me personally,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “More importantly, the opportunity to play an iconic tennis program like UCLA is a special treat for my players. We’re looking forward to giving them everything we’ve got and then some.”

Both of BYU’s losses this season have come on the road. The Cougars have not played a Pac-12 team this season.

No. 6 UCLA is coming off a 5-2 win at home against USC. The Bruins have yet to lose at home this season.
