Cougars Win Big Over Huskies

Image

PROVO -- The BYU men's swim team won its last nonconference meet of the season against the Washington Huskies 154-103. With the win the Cougars improve to 3-1 on the season.

"I was pleased with everyone's effort today," said BYU men's head swim coach Tim Powers. "We've been away from the altitude for about a month now and just had some of our hardest training of the year."

The Cougars came off the blocks ready as they took the first four events. In the first event Mark Chay, Chris Patience, Jorge Azevedo and Brett Allen took the 200 medley relay (1:30.66) and were followed by a first-place finish from Chad Fond in the 1000 free (9:39.77).

In events 3 and 4 BYU got first and second-place finishes helping the Cougars take a commanding lead over the Huskies. Travis Price (1:41.73) and Neal Hamilton (1:42.99) went one-two in the 200 free and in the 100 butterfly Azevedo (51.84) and Jacoby Jacobsen (52.00) took first and second, respectively.

The Huskies then got on track in the next two events where they got back-to-back first-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 200 butterfly. Allen (20.25) and Price (21.60) responded in event 7 where they went one-two in the 50 free. At the first intermission break for the 1- and 3-meter dives BYU led UW 81-45.

"Allen's 50 free was impressive," said Coach Powers. "I was pleased with his 20.25 in the 50 free and he also had other great swims on the day."

The Huskies didn't travel any divers with them, but BYU still held exhibition dives. Brandon Watson scored the highest in both the 1-meter (40) and 3-meter (43.5) dives. BYU then swept the 100 free with Allen (45.46), Patience (46.44) and Chay (47.70) going one-two-three, respectively. The next event scored the same for the Cougars as Jacobsen (1:54.56), John Ferrell (1:54.65) and Hamilton (1:55.26) took first, second and third, respectively, in the 200 backstroke.

The Cougars then went one-two-three again in the 500 free as Fong (4:39.59), Price (4:40.21) and Zach Anderson (4:45.65) took the top spots, respectively. Azevedo then got his third first-place finish of the meet during the 100 butterfly (49.76) and put BYU ahead of UW 145-79 before the final intermission.

In the final two events BYU got a first-place and second-place finish from Hamilton (1:55.79) and from Chay (1:57.56) in the 200 IM and Azevedo, Patience, Allen and Price in the 400 free relay (3:05.89).

The meet Saturday against UW was the final non-conference meet of the season for the Cougars. BYU will begin its Mountain West Conference schedule on Jan. 26 when they face Air Force in Provo.

Cougars Back in the Water Against the Huskies

Image

PROVO -- The BYU men's swim team is anxious to get back into the water and face the Washington Huskies on Saturday. It has been two months since the Cougars competed in their last dual meet and Coach Powers is looking forward to see his boys in action as the meet will begin at 4 p.m. (MST) at the Richards Building pool.

"We had a good Christmas training," said BYU men's head swim coach Tim Powers. "I'm looking forward for Saturday's meet. We should have a lot of fast swims."

BYU went up to Seattle last year to face the Huskies, but coming off of a hard week of training a tired Cougar squad lost by five points, the difference of one relay where BYU trailed by .5 seconds. The last time Washington came to Provo the Cougars defeated the Huskies 161-101.

The last dual meet BYU swam in was over two months ago against UNLV where they lost a tight one, 155-145. The Cougars swam hard and with a simple change of places against the Rebels in just one event, BYU could have won the meet.

The Cougars look to rebound off that loss and start the 2007 year on the right foot this Saturday when they face the Huskies.

"It should be a good meet," said Coach Powers. "They have some good swimmers and it has always been a good meet for us in the past."
