MPSF Championships day one

LOS ANGELES - With day one of the MPSF Championships over, the women currently are in fourth place with 60 points and the men are in eighth place with 28 points.

UNLV is the men's leader with 80 points and UC Davis is the women's leader with 72 points.

"We swam great tonight and and in a great position for the guys and the girls," head coach John Brooks said. "Unfortunately the guys 200 med relay team was disqualified but we'll be okay. It is a four-day meet so we have a lot of time to make up the points we missed out on today." 

The meet began with the 200 medley relay. The team consisting of Hailey Campbell, Kassandra Bispo, Kimberly Welch Doroghian and Taryn Toolson Lewis finished in third place with a time of 1:41.09 to score 32 points. On the men's side, the team of Preston Jenkins, Brady Wells, David Armstrong and Brent Murray finished in third place with a time of 1:28.49 but was disqualified from the race for leaving the blocks early.

The second event of the night was the 800 free relay. Alexandra Dodds, Alia Welsh, Andrea Grant and Natalie Bennion finished in fifth place with a time of 7:23.79, good for 28 points. Stott Bushnell, Garret Beaman, Samuel Bates and Jenkins finished in fifth with a time of 6:34.53, also good for 28 points.

The MPSF Championships will resume tomorrow for both the divers and the swimmers. The swim meet begins tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. PST with the 500 free prelims and include the 200 IM prelims and the 50 free prelims. There will be a break during the day and the meet resumes at 6 p.m. that evening with the 200 free relay finals as well as the finals to the 500 free, 200 IM and the 50 free.

"We are excited for the events tomorrow," Brooks said. "We are good in all the events tomorrow and we will be very competitve for both the guys and the girls."

The dive meet begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. MST with the women's 1-meter prelims. The finals are at 12:15 pm and the consolation finals at 1 p.m. The men's 3-meter prelims will begin at 3:15 p.m. MST and the finals will start at 4:40 with the consolation finals at 5:25 p.m.

PROVO, Utah - The BYU men's and women's swimming and diving teams look to repeat as champions in the MPSF Championships this weekend, Wednesday through Saturday. The swimming championships will take place at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif., and the diving championships will take place at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Both the men and the women return to the meet as conference champions. The men won the championship last year with a score of 625, beating second place UNLV (603.5) and Wyoming (556). The women won with a score of 732 with UC Santa Barbara finishing in second and University of California Davis coming in at third place.

Preston Jenkins carries the second-ranked conference time this year in the 100 back (47.86) and the 200 back (1:44.32), both NCAA 'B cuts. Nicholas Suder holds the top score for the men's three-meter (355.55) in the MPSF.

Hailey Campbell has the second fastest time in the 100 back ('B cut 1:04.75). Campbell currently is the championship meet record holder in both the 100 back (53.47) and the 200 back (1:55.46). Diver Dayna Christensen holds both the one-meter and three-meter record in the MPSF, and has the top score for the three-meter this season (340.65).

Multiple relay teams hold the second-fastest times for both the men and the women.
