League Play Continues At UNLV

Entering the second half of the 2011 MWC Race, BYU’s women’s basketball team (15-7, 7-1) is in first place in the most recent league standings.

They travel to Las Vegas to battle UNLV (9-13, 2-6) on Sat. Feb. 5 at 2:30 p.m., in a game that airs live on The Mtn.

UNLV enters the week in sixth place in the most recent MWC standings with a (9-13, 2-6) record. Most recent, the Rebels dropped a 52-71 game to Utah on Tues. Feb. 1. They’ve captured league victories over Air Force and New Mexico. Sophomore guard Kelli Thompson is leading the way in scoring for UNLV with 13.7 points while grabbing 3.4 boards a game. Junior forward Jamie Smith tops the team in the rebound category grabbing 7.6 rebounds per contest and she’s tied with Thompson for the most steals with 32 to date. Teammate Mia Bell has the most assists with a total of 93. Kathy Olivier enters her third season at the helm of UNLV’s women’s basketball program.

Senior point guard Jazmine Foreman brought the spark that boosted the BYU women’s basketball team (9-5, 1-0) to a 75-64 win against UNLV (7-8, 0-1), putting up a season-high 19 points.

Foreman shot 50 percent for the night and contributed five rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Helping Foreman was Coriann Fraughton with her second double-double of the season, scoring 15 points with 13 rebounds. Mindy Bonham also reached double figures with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Haley Hall dished out a team and game high 10 assists and put up eight points.

Despite being down by a point, 40-39 at the break, the Cougars came out in the second half and took the lead right back with freshman Jennifer Hamson putting in a layup and Fraughton following it with another two points. Foreman stole the ball from UNLV’s Byrd with 9:30 left in the game for a coast-to-coast layup, starting the Cougars on a 6-2 run that would secure the lead and take them to victory.

WHAT’S NEXT

The BYU women’s basketball team continues league action on Wed. Feb. 9 when it hosts the Air Force Academy at 7 p.m. They then take a short trip to Salt Lake City for a matchup with instate rival, Utah on Sat. Feb. 12. That game tips off at 4 p.m., and is scheduled to air live on CBS C.
