Pordenone, Italy (May 18, 2010) – Junior guard Jazmine Foreman scored a team-high 12 points for the Cougar women in their 82-51 win over the San Martino Di Lupari Basketball Club Team, Tuesday.

Stephanie Vermunt and Haley Hall were the other two for BYU in double figures with 11 and 10 respectively. The win improves the team’s record on their European Tour to 2-0.

“We played really well as team, we were very balanced offensively and it was a fun game,” commented coach Jeff Judkins. “This was a very athletic and well coached team we played tonight. I thought Dani Peterson, Kristen Riley and Stephanie Vermunt all played really well for us.”

Kristen Riley led the Cougar team on the boards with nine and she also had six points. Hall dished out a team-high six assists to go along with her three steals. Foreman also recorded three steals and five assists in the contest.

Mindy Bonham and Coriann Wood scored nine points each with Dani Peterson right behind with eight points. Guard Marie Beck had seven points while junior forward Megan Leach contributed four points to the team’s winning effort. Redshirt freshman Alexis Kaufusi had six points, four rebounds and one assist.

The San Martino Di Lupardi team was in the game through two-thirds of the first quarter down 16-8 before BYU would go on a 9-0 run to take a 25-8 lead after the first 10 minutes of action. The visiting Cougar team would never look back, ahead 49-19 after two quarters. The home team could only manage nine points in the quarter.

Vermunt had back-to-back three’s in the third quarter to give BYU a 66-32 advantage with 3:55 left. The Cougars shot .733 (11-15) from behind the arc and made all but one of their free throws for the game.

The third quarter would prove to be the best for the home team as they scored 21 of their 51 points in that 10-minute span.

BYU’s women’s hoops team heads to Slovenia on Wednesday, May 19 for its third of four games to be played during their European Tour.

Report from Venice, Italy by Stephanie Vermunt 5/18/10

We spent the day in Venice after a one-hour train ride from Pordenone. We got to see the Chapel at St. Marco, Marco Polo’s house and the Rialto Bridge.

Venice is a city where it is nearly impossible to know your way around and extremely easy to get lost. There are no cars and there are countless canals and small alleyways that make Venice a virtual maze!

I noticed that things may look familiar to you and you think you know where you are and it is right at that moment that you notice you are completely lost! My favorite spot in Venice was St. Marco’s Chapel and the square around it.

I really loved Venice. It is unlike anything we would ever see in the United States. It is BEAUTIFUL!! However, the one thing I didn’t like was how busy it was with so many tourists. While we were walking around all the shops, I looked at plenty of pretty things but didn’t end up buying anything

Tonight we played our second game of our European Tour. The team was called San Martino Di Lupari. The game was awesome! We won by a quite a bit. It was fun because the team was more competitive and we played really well as a team. It is easy to see that we are all having a lot of fun together.

This team was pretty athletic and they played in a different way than what we are used to. They definitely have a different style. The facility where we played was nice and it was not like most gyms that you see in the U.S. It was neat to play in that kind of arena.
