SALT LAKE CITY -- The BYU women’s basketball team (14-5, 5-2) took the Utah Utes by storm with a 69-52 victory in Salt Lake, adding five points for BYU to the Deseret First Duel and tying the Cougars for first place in the Mountain West Conference.

"We were agressive and did a good job of speeding up the game," said head coach Jeff Judkins. "I'm so happy for Haley. She's been waiting for this game and definitely deserves it. It's nice to get a win up here."

Haley Hall led the BYU Cougars in every category against the Utes. Her 24 points is a new season-and career-high, defeating her previous career-record of 16 points. She recorded a new career record with nine rebounds and another with her six 3-pointers in the winning effort.

"Having to sit out for the last three years has been disappointing," Hall said. "This is a game I've looked forward to and this was a huge win for us to get back on track in the conference race."

The first points of the game came just one minute in from Mindy Bonham on a quick layup allowing BYU to take the lead.

Bonham led the defensive effort for BYU while also holding her own on offense, finishing with four points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Bonham held Utah’s leading scorer Kalee Whipple to just 16 points.

"Mindy did an amazing job defending Kalee," Judkins said.

The Utes and the Cougars went on a dry run for four minutes in the first half but Alexis Kaufusi brought BYU back with a pull-up jumper to keep the score tied. There were four lead changes in the first half and in the game.

BYU saw its largest lead of the first half, 11 points, as they headed into the locker room for halftime. The Cougars were already up six after back-to-back possessions with Bonham and Hall each putting up two but would stretch the lead to 11 after a 3-pointer from Kristen Riley and another jumper from Riley at the halftime buzzer.

With 13 minutes to play in the second half, the Cougars went on a 9-0 run highlighted by back-to-back layups from Kaufusi and a 3-pointer from Coriann Wood.

The Cougars held the lead for the entire second half after numerous lead changes in the first, leading by 25 points at one time.

BYU’s last win against Utah at the Huntsman Center came on Jan. 7, 2006, with 61-60 win. The Cougars improve their record against Utah under Coach Judkins to 7-13.

As of today’s game, at least two BYU players have scored in double-figures in every game. Today’s win saw Hall and Wood in double figures. Wood finished with 10 points.

Up next for BYU is a road trip to TCU on Wednesday and will then return home again on Feb. 6 to take on UNLV.
