Boettcher Named Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

PROVO -- BYU Women’s Basketball Head Coach Jeff Judkins has named Chris Boettcher to fill the position of assistant basketball coach effective immediately. He replaces Jonas Chatterton who left the program at the end of last season to pursue other career interests in southern California.

“I’m really excited to have Chris join our staff, and he’ll be a great addition to our program,” Judkins said. “He has a lot of coaching experience coming from Utah Valley University. He’ll be a great recruiter, brings a lot of energy, and has tremendous enthusiasm for the game of basketball.”

For the past eight years, Chris Boettcher has been with Utah Valley University under Coach Cathy Nixon's staff. At the beginning of the 2007-08 season he was promoted to Associate Head Coach. Boettcher's responsibilities included the defense and working with the guards.

Prior to coming to Utah Valley, he spent one season coaching at Vale High School near Ontario, Oregon.

“This is a great move for us both professionally and personally,” said Boettcher. “Our family is very excited for the opportunity to return to BYU. I’m looking forward to working with coach Judkins and the rest of the coaching staff. I have great respect for Jeff and I’m sure I will learn a lot from him.”

Before assuming his role at Vale, Boettcher spent time in Japan where he served as the Basketball Consultant for the city of Takayama from 1997 to 2000. He worked with elementary aged children to junior college players and was specifically assigned to prepare the top boys and girl’s high school teams for competition at the Japanese National Tournament. His teams reached the National Tournament for the first time ever.

From 1994 to 1997 Boettcher was an assistant coach for the Metro State men's team under coach Charles Bradley. His association with Bradley began at BYU where Boettcher was a student assistant coach under Roger Reid and an assistant JV coach under John Hansen from 1989 to 1994.

Boettcher prepped at Weiser (Idaho) High School, lettering in football, basketball and baseball. After graduating in 1986, he served a LDS Church mission in Kobe, Japan. He earned a bachelor's degree from BYU in math with a P.E. coaching minor in 1994.

Boettcher and his wife, the former Cinthya Mallea, have five children, four boys (Jacob, Nikolas, Ethan and Noah), and one daughter (Isabel).
