Three-Point Shooting Not Enough For Cougars
PROVO -- Despite recording a season-high nine three-pointers, the BYU women’s basketball team dropped a 75-55 contest to TCU at the Marriott Center on Saturday. With the loss the Cougars are now 16-6 on the season and 6-4 in Mountain West Conference play.
“We did a good job executing and putting the ball inside in the first half,” said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. “In the second half we went away from that. I thought we did a poor job attacking the zone. TCU basically took our inside presence away with that.”
Freshman Stephanie Buhler led BYU with a career-high nine points, all three-point shot attempts. Sophomore point guard Jazmine Foreman brought down nine rebounds to lead the Cougars. The BYU bench contributed 27 of the team’s total points, compared to TCU’s 14 bench points.
“[Buhler’s] a very good shooter and not afraid to take shots,” said Judkins. “I was proud of her. She came in and was aggressive. The shots she hit she made with confidence.”
The Horned Frogs started strong defensively, recording two steals in the first two minutes of the game and jumping out to a six-point lead. With 13:06 remaining in the game, center Cassie King’s layin pulled the Cougars to within four points, as BYU then went on a 8-0 run. TCU was held scoreless for over five minutes before a three-point make with 8:05 to play in the half.
Both teams battled back-and-forth, with six lead changes before the halftime break. A make from beyond-the-arc by Coriann Wood with 1:45 to play in the half put the Cougars up 29-28. However, two TCU field goals with less than a minute remaining sent the team into the locker room with the Horned Frogs up 32-29. BYU is now 6-4 when trailing at the half.
TCU extended its lead to six points with two trips to the free throw line to begin the second half. Field goals by King and Mindy Nielson brought the Cougars to within four points, before TCU scored 16 unanswered points over the next five minutes, building its largest lead of the game—20 points.
“Defensively TCU beat us to everything—rebounds, cuts, spacing out, everything,” said Judkins. “We’ve had trouble starting the second half lately.”
Four three-pointers snapped the BYU drought, including two by Buhler. Jenteal Jackson and Jamie Judkins contributed treys of their own, closing the Horned Frog lead to 10 points with 7:52 to play. The Cougars were unable to complete their comeback attempt as the Horned Frogs went to the free throw line five times to end the game, totaling 20 attempts in the second half.
Up next the Cougars travel to take on New Mexico on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast live on The Mtn.
